Destiny 2: Forsaken - watch 17 mins of awesome new Gambit gameplay
Gambit is PvP. And PvE. It's wild. Get involved.
I've suffered Destiny 2 fatigue like the rest of you. But the new Gambit mode, coming as part of the Forsaken update on September 4, feels fresh, fast and fun.
Two teams enter a PvE map and race to summon a boss to defeat. But there's spanners in the works.
The Fireteams take down enemies in separate arenas, and pick up the motes of light they drop, popping them into the bank. Get killed and you lose all the motes you're holding so you need to sweep up the motes and slam them into the bank while avoiding getting shot. You want to drop motes off in bulk though, as every time you deposit 5, 10 or 15 motes at a time, you get to summon a blocker.
A blocker attacks the other team with the intention of slowing down their progress. Even better, for every 25 motes in the bank, one of your Fireteam gets to warp into the other team's arena and take the fight to them, becoming an absolute nuisance with a gun.
Gambit feels more PvE than PvP, but it is a good combo of both, designed to let PvE players get a little more involved with PvP without the brutal lessons of deathmatch. It's a fluid experience where strangers can play without a lot of co-ordination - my Fireteam consisted of one player who didn't speak English - and we still managed to bring home the bacon.
Here's two matches recorded live at E3 in Bungie's hotel room. After a short loading period, the match begins at 1 minute in if you want to skip straight to the action.
Look out for the bit where I put a Cabal boss down by shooting him right in the ass. Happy days.
