Dead Rising taking a bite out of iPhones later this year

Zombie killing? There's an app for that, apparently.

IGN brings word that Capcom's all-you-can-murder zombie buffet is making the jump to iPhone. Itching to kill zombies in a mall while shopping in an actual mall? Have at it.

Granted, there is one caveat: if - in addition to scooping out your brain - Dead Rising 2 has stolen your heart, you'll be slightly disappointed to hear that Dead Rising iPhone is modeled after the series' first entry. Granted, while Frank's front-and-center again, the iPhone title's story and structure are apparently all-new. So hooray for that.

The game's most potentially interesting feature, however, comes in the form of social networking tools. Wait! No! Don't fall asleep! See, here's how it works: if you die, for instance, because your teddy bear-centric offense wasn't quite enough to stave off the zombie apocalypse, a distress call will go out to your friends on Facebook and Twitter. If they intercept it, you'll spring back to life with all your PP intact. However, if your friends are jerks who decide to leave you for dead, you'll appear as a killable zombie in their games. Of course, you won't have control over said undead doppelganger, but it's still a neat idea.

There are some impressions through the link, if you're interested. Us, we're just hoping the Dead Rising iPhone doesn't suffer the same grim fate as Dead Rising Wii. That game's sole, lonely zombie inhabitant was enthusiastic, no doubt, but even he couldn't make up for this absence of his 50,000 brothers and sisters. We still feel kind of bad about throwing potted plants at him until he died his second - and probably least dignified - death. Maybe all he really wanted was a friend.

The game's out this holiday season.
