Dead Island's items and crafting to appeal to RPG fans
Dead Island lifts itself out of the zombie action genre by its emphasis on RPG-like crafting, trading and item collection.
"I think people are really going to enjoy crafting all the goofy types of weapons, like deodorant bombs," Deep Silver's Doug McLeod told Destructoid, although he refused to elaborate, adding, "You've got to see that one to believe it. It's impressive."
MeLeod, who oversaw the project for publisher Deep Silver, said the game's items make it interesting for those who aren't otherwise keen on action survival.
"I'm not the biggest zombie buff," he said. "But when I started to play it more and get more involved with my character, it shares a lot with other RPGs.
"You'll find common items everywhere like broomsticks, wrenches hammers. The more you play, you'll find the next level up - the uncommon items, they're in green. And then you'll see the next items, they're in blue.
"There's an orange. I recently found my first orange item, and it's the Legendary Crowbar. That's all I can say about it."
Additionally, you'll be able to sell and trade items with other players, or if playing solo, with NPCs.
Dead Island is expected on OnLive, PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in early September. Watch the full interview below.
