Day One Garry's Incident developer withdraws copyright claim on negative review

Day One Garry's Incident developer Wild Games has apologised for issuing a DCMA takedown on a video review heavily criticising the indie survival effort.

In a statement published on Kotaku, Wild Games CEO Stephane Woods said it had failed to discuss monetisation of reviews before sending an evaluation copy of the game to TotalBiscuit, and filed a copyright takedown on those grounds.

"After the video was made unavailable, we have taken seriously the reaction from the community concerning freedom of expression. We strongly believe in the freedom of expression of people and medias and have removed our copyright claim," the executive said.

"Wild Games Studio didn’t intend on preventing anyone from using their right to freedom of expression. For this reason, Wild Games Studio sincerely apologizes to TotalBiscuit and anyone who felt that their freedom of speech was denied."

The "reaction" Woods referred to was a wave of criticism of the takedown notice, which was assumed to have been issued in response to TotalBiscuit's damning critique of the game.

As Kotaku points out, the company does not seem to have issued takedowns on other, more complimentary videos which have also been monetised.
