Dark Souls pendant mystery resolved
Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki has finally explained the purpose of the mysterious pendant item which players can choose as a starting gift.
Speaking with IGN, the director confirmed that the pendant literally has no effect or use.
"When it comes to the pendant, I actually had a little bit of an intention to play a prank," he admitted.
The pendant is one of a number of items the player can choose when creating a character, including a skeleton key, a ring which allows you to speak to a specific character, a small cache of bombs, and a healing potion.
Although the game describes the pendant as as a "trinket", and says it has "no effect, but fond memories comfort travellers", the complicated nature of Dark Souls' canon and systems led to much speculation as to its use, especially as Miyazaki had said it was the gift he'd choose.
Interest in Dark Souls has been renewed recently by the release of a PC version and a significant piece of DLC.
