Dark Souls 3: Iudex Gundyr to Firelink Shrine

With Iudex Gundyr dead you can open the double doors on the far side of his arena. Pass through and collect a Broken Straight Sword from the corpse.

Before heading uphill walk to the cliff edge and look right to spot a cliff side path. Two grunts await you here. If you advance slowly you can pull one forward without aggroing the other one. Be very careful on the narrow path ahead as you retrieve a Homeward Bone. There’s a good lesson to be learned here about audio cues; if you listen out, you can hear the enemies on the path above. Forewarned is forearmed.

As you advance up the hill, two grunts await you in the long grass to the left. If you approach and kill them you’ll aggro two more above – a shielded grunt and a crossbowman. You'll have an easier time of this if you advance further up the track and circle back to kill the two on higher ground first; the sleepers in the grass usually don't stir.

On the other side of the stairs from the long grass, an amusingly oblivious grunt is staring out over the scenery. Attack or kick him to send him to his death.

There’s more to see and do before entering the torch-flanked door. Facing the door, head right to pass through some graves and face a dog. If you've never played a Souls game before, be wary of the speed of this enemy type; they get behind you quick as a wink. When it's dead, collect an Ember from among the tombstones.

Now let's explore the left side of the shrine, near where you killed the four grunts earlier. Climb the stairs so you can take the East-West Shield out of a tree. Turn around and advance up another flight of steps to take out two grunts resting in your path. Continue on and around to grab an Ember from a corpse. Push on a bit further, circling around without dropping down any ledges, to grab a Homeward Bone from behind a tomb.

There’s one more path outside the shrine we haven’t explored yet, but it’s guarded by an NPC. This guy is really worth killing, as he drops an Uchigatana, which is a pretty powerful weapon early in the game. If you come back later with a bow, he’s easy to cheese by sniping and running away; boring, but very rewarding. If you'd like to have a go at fighting him now, wait just a few moments until we activate the next bonfire first. Head on into the Firelink Shrine through the central doors.

Continue to Firelink Shrine.
