Crytek, CCP see F2P future for next-gen consoles

Both Crytek and CCP expect Sony and Microsoft to be more open to non-traditional business models with new platforms.

Both platform holders have made cautious explorations of the freemium sphere, with Sony notably embracing CCP's Dust 514, which is not only free-to-play but interacts with PC MMO EVE Online, both unthinkable concepts in the PlayStation 3's early years.

“It’s hard to imagine the free-to-play transition slowing down any time soon – the model works so well for gamers. As we steer towards the next generation of consoles, I’d expect to see a much larger array of triple-A titles available in the free-to-play model," CCP's David Reid told MCV.

“What is common now on the PC, tablet and smartphone is likely to become the primary way of monetising console games by the end of this next generation.”

Crytek's Phillipe Stegmann agreed.

“The more methods offered by a platform, the more attractive the platform will be,” he said. “Because of this, I predict that all current monetisation options will be supported by all platforms.”

Sony is expected to reveal the PlayStation 4, codenamed Orbis, at the February 20 PlayStation Meeting. Microsoft hasn't set any dates to unveil Durango (the "Xbox 720"), but both consoles seem likely to launch before the end of 2013, suggesting we'll hear something soon.

Thanks, Develop.
