Should you buy Biomutant? Review impressions

Biomutant is an ambitious open-world action RPG, but is it any good?

I don't want to spoil what Dorrani and I discuss in our video chat below, but I will say that Biomutant is one of the most uniquely odd games I've played in a long time. It's the kind of game that perhaps these days can only come out of THQ Nordic, a game that is aiming for the sky but only manages to reach the second floor balcony of that 3-star hotel you would stay at but only if you had too.

Hopefully you've watched our lengthy chat above and come away with a better idea of what Biomutant is. As I tried to convey via what seemed like a poor telephone link, Biomutant is a game that has many flaws, but none of them stopped me enjoying this often gorgeous game. On Series X it nips along at a fairly smooth 60 FPS and the colours are very pleasing to the eye. It's worth noting that the game doesn't have any specific Xbox Series X or PS5 enhancements as of yet, but the developer has suggested news on that is coming.

If this were a Biomutant review, which it isn't as I'm probably only about 10-15 hours into the game (a game that is threatening to be significantly longer than that), there'd be a fairly middling score at the end that you'd have glanced at and then made up your mind that Experiment 101's sprawling adventure isn't up to much and is one to be avoided. It's not a review, though, so you can't do that, and maybe you've seen something you like the look of in our video chat. I don't think Biomutant is a great game, but it's a game that is far from a complete disaster and one that still manages to consistently offer a good time.

Biomutant is out on May 25 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
