Burden trailer shows a neat twist on tower defence
One of three games signed to new Australian publisher Surprise Attack Games, Burden has players building defensive devices on the body of great beast, lumbering through the landscape.
A story-driven tower defence, Burden is coming to Mac, PC and tablets in 2014.
Players take control of a mage-like character and protect their colossus - a giant beast of burden transporting cargo across the landscape. If successful, the player will please the gods, helping to restore the environment.
What this means in practical terms is your battlefield is always moving, and enemies swarm across the colossus and attack from the skies as you scamper about setting up and upgrading defences.
Developer Pixel Pickle Games is a Melbourne team founded by Robert Dowling, who worked as an animator on Frozen Synapse, as well as producing adventure Lylian: Paranoid Friendship. He was joined by Clinton Shepard, a former Big Ant programmer who works at Tin Man Games.
If you're in Melbourne for PAX Australia this weekend, drop by Surprise Attack's booth to check out Burden; the footage below is pre-alpha, but you certainly get the idea.
