Blood Alloy is a Kickstarter Metroidvania cross of Dark Souls/Hotline Miami/Vanquish
More than perhaps any other medium, video games wear their inspirations on their sleeves, but perhaps none moreso than Blood Alloy, which is currently on Kickstarter asking for $50,000 and targetting the PC, Mac and Ouya. Check below the jump for its dream team list of influences.
It would be criminal to edit down the Boston based Suppresive Fire Games' (legally one person, who feels "that creating new, unique gameplay experiences was the only thing worth living for") list of influences. So here they are:
- Metroid: Rich worlds, environmental storytelling, discovering secrets, gaining new abilities and weapons
- Turrican: 360-degree aiming, level design that rewards exploration
- Hotline Miami: Savage gunplay, ruthlessly aggressive enemies, pounding soundtrack
- Demon's Souls/ Dark Souls: Stamina-based combat mechanics, cohesive world-building,
- Vanquish: Extremely mobile main character, blisteringly fast-paced combat
- Abuse: Dark atmosphere, terrifying enemies, simultaneous run-and-gun gameplay with 360 degree aiming
- Deus Ex: Brilliant storyline, gameplay and narrative that completely branch for the last half-hour of gameplay depending on your choices
I suppose at the their core, a game as mechanically dense as a Metroidvania would always probably have a lot of influences. The game is $15 to preorder for the most part, although if it looks like something you're into, there're another ~900 copies going at $10.
Oddly, despite being a $50,000 exactly Kickstarter targeting the Ouya, the game isn't part of the console's grief stricken Free the Games Fund. Perhaps the game's creator Frank Washburn agrees with the numerous other developers who don't appreciate the way it's been handled.
Suppressive Fire Games are currently estimating a December 2014 release.
