Battlefield 4: Dragon's Teeth DLC to add two-handed ballistic shields
Battlefield 4 senior animator Ryan Duffin has revealed that DICE's next DLC pack 'Dragon's Teeth' will introduce two-handed ballistic shields into the mix.
Polygon reports that during a GDC sessions, Duffin explained that DICE started playing around with the shield idea by giving players a piece of moveable cover they could simultaneously shoot from behind, but the studio studio ultimately rested on making it two-handed.
While shield users won't be able to shoot while cowering behind their mobile cover, they can bash other players with it up to a metre away. "There was a lot of resistance at first," Duffin added, "but the more we assessed it, the more we realized it was a better feature. It turns out that stopping bullets in a first-person shooter is a ton of fun. We’re confident that it will create a new dynamic for the game.”
As part of the GDC session, entitled, "Using the Power of Layered Animation to Expand Premium Content in Battlefield 4," Duffin added that DICE had tried to add shields into Battlefield games before, but that animation restraints in previous games proved problematic.
He said, "We didn't have enough memory. It added about a megabyte, but a megabyte on a 2006 console is a lot, so it didn't work out."
