Bandai Namco chasing GFWL alternatives for Dark Souls on PC
The fate of Dark Souls on PC is still up in the air, but Bandai Namco has confirmed it is investigating alternatives to Games for Windows Live, which is due to close in July.
In a post on the publisher's Tumblr, Bandai Namco acknowledged our constant barrage of questions on the subject of what's happening with Dark Souls - specially now Dark Souls 2 is out.
"We thoroughly appreciate the dedicated fans who are adventuring through Lordran (maybe for the first time!) and we’d like to clarify a few points," it said.
"Dark Souls will remain fully functional on GFWL for the foreseeable future.
"Bandai Namco Games is currently seeking avenues to continue support and ensure the functionality of Dark Souls on other services. We will have more news and updates to share on this in the coming months."
At this point I cannot resist pointing out that "fully functional on GFWL" is, in many people's opinions, "not functional at all". You need to sign into the unpopular DRM service to save your game in Dark Souls on PC, and setting up an account, resetting your password and connecting to the GFWL servers can be an absolute nightmare. I personally haven't been able to play Dark Souls on PC in months.
Nobody's going to miss GFWL, but it would be really excellent if we could get a solid answer about Dark Souls and an update on Microsoft on what it's doing on the PC side. Microsoft boss Phil Spencer said recently we will hear news on that front this summer.
Thanks, Polygon.
