Assassin's Creed Valhalla Hunwald, Aelfgar, or Herefrith? | Who should you choose for Lincolnscire Ealdorman

Across the twisting tale of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the task of kingmaker once again falls on Eivor’s weary shoulders. This time, the fate of Lincolnscire is in their hands, as they cast the deciding vote in the Althing between Hunwald, Aelfgar, and Bishop Herefrith.

The decision of who should be the Ealdorman in Lincolnscire is one of the toughest in all of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

It would take a heart of stone not to consider the sentimental choice, Hunwald, heir of the last Ealdorman, hopeless romantic and all-around nice guy.

But the game constantly gnaws at your conscience by suggesting that Lincolnscire needs a stronger leader, and that Aelfgar or Herefrith would be a better choice.

Here’s what happens when you choose Hunwald, Aelfgar, and Herefrith as Ealdorman as Lincolnscire, so you can make the "right" choice for your storyline on the way to the best ending in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

While this might not be one of the choices that has an effect on your relationship with Sigurd like during your conversation with Basim and Fulke, characters will make further reference to it during the English arc of the story.

It’s more similar to your earlier choices with Leofrith in Ledecesterscire and Oswald in East Anglia, and your later choices in Essexe.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Lincolnscire Ealdorman | Should you choose Hunwald, Aelfgar, or Herefrith?

In coming up with your choice of Lincolnscire Ealdorman, let’s set some key points on the table early.

Without resorting to outright spoilers, you don’t want to pick Bishop Herefrith. You’ve seen a few clues as to why this is a bad idea so far, and while it’s definitely not a disaster if you do pick him, it’s also not the “right” choice.

Next up is Hunwald.

He’s such a nice chap, but is widely considered to be a bit soft for the job. Despite this perception, he’ll dedicate his all to taking on his father’s office should you choose him, and there aren’t any massively negative repercussions that I’ve seen.

Whatever happens, he’ll ask if Swanburrow can come and live at Ravensthorpe. This adds a new house to your settlement which contributes to your feast buff and increases your assassination damage.

Hunwald will also come to your aid in the final battle with King Aelfred.

Should you choose Aelfgar, the outcome of your alliance is basically the same, and it’ll still be Hunwald that represents Lincolnscire at your side.

However, the main difference will be that Hunwald joins Swanburrow in Ravensthorpe. So while he’s initially crushed by the loss of his ancestral kingdom, he gets to be with his beloved.

Personally, I feel that Aelfgar and Hunwald are both worthy choices - but ultimately, it’s Hunwald who sticks his neck out for his friends, and it’s a strong alliance the Raven clan are after.

To sum up, when you’re choosing the Lincolnscire Ealdorman:

  • Don’t choose Bishop Herefrith, just don’t do it
  • If you choose Hunwald, he’s happy and Swanburrow comes to Ravensthrope
  • If you choose Aelfgar, Hunwald is upset, but he joins Swanburrow to live in Ravensthorpe
  • Either way, it looks like Hunwald represents Lincolnscire at your final showdown with Aelfred later in the game
