All Sphinx's Riddle Answers in Assassin's Creed Odyssey
To answer the Sphinx's riddles in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, you'll have to complete the mandatory story quest Lore of the Sphinx, which starts after accessing Atlantis for the first time (which we've laid out for you here). Follow the quest until you use the medallion at night at the ruins, whereupon the Sphinx will reveal herself and ask you three riddles.
Though only asking you three, the game pulls from a larger pool, meaning it could be any three of twelve. Fortunately we've laid all the possible riddles for you below, and what to answer to them:
Riddle | Answer |
---|---|
I create my lair with earthen string, and dispatch my prey with a biting sting. | A spider |
Some try to hide, some try to cheat; but time will show, we always will meet. Try as you might to guess my name. | Death |
Never resting, never still; moving silently from hill to hill; it does not walk, run or trot; all is cool where it is not. | The sun |
What can bring back the dead; make you cry, make you laugh, make you young; is born in an instant, yet lasts a lifetime. | Memory |
What is always old and sometimes new; never sad, sometimes blue; never empty, but sometimes full; never pushes, always pulls? | The moon |
What is large, yet never grows; has roots that cannot be seen; and is taller than trees? | A mountain |
I’m alive, but without breath; I’m as cold in life as in death; I’m never thirsty, though I always drink. | A fish |
In spring I am gay in handsome array; in summer more clothing I wear; when colder it grows, I fling off my clothes; and in winter quite naked appear. | A tree |
At night they come without being fetched, and by day they are lost without being stolen. | Stars |
What can run, but never walks; has a mouth, but never talks; has a head, but never weeps; has a bed, but never sleeps? | A river |
This thing all things devour: birds, beasts, trees, flowers; gnaws iron, bites steel; grinds hard stones to meal; slays kings, ruins towns; and beats high mountains down. | Time |
As small as your thumb, I am light in the air. You may hear me before you see me, but trust that I’m here. | A hummingbird |

What Happens If You Answer the Sphinx's Riddle Incorrectly?
Answer any of the riddles wrong, or push in the wrong runes afterwards, and a cinematic will play that shows her chide you, then blast you with a beam of energy. This is an instant kill and will force you to restart the sequence.
Can You Fight the Sphinx?
No, you have to beat her in a test of riddles. The Sphinx is specifically there to test Kassandra's/Alexios' intellectual power, so she won't engage in a proper boss fight and instead has to be beaten through intelligence and wit.
Sphinx Rewards
Once you answer it correctly, you'll get the artefact itself, the "Riddle Me This" achievement, a Sphinx figurehead you can put on the Adrestia, and an epic rarity weapon called the Mace of the Sphinx.
Greece is indeed the word here at USG, where we've got plenty of Odyssey content to spare. Check out Mike's review of the game here, or see which of us put the game in our top ten of the year and how it placed here!
