Are people sick of Kickstarter? Not according to Wasteland 2 dev

Wasteland 2 developer inXile Entertainment's Brian Fargo doesn't believe people are sick of Kickstarter, and has attributed the smaller chance of success compared to what it was previously to "Kickstarter doing its job."

Speaking to Digital Spy in an interview, Fargo said. "I think sometimes some of the projects that have failed is Kickstarter doing its job.

"Which is saying, 'We don't really want that, or there's already too much like it'. I think it worked very well for us, and it worked well for [Tim] Schafer, because it's quite honest to say this game wouldn't have existed without it, period, because we're a middle-ground developer, we're not two guys."

Fargo added that making a Kickstarter for a game genre that already has many products in the market is what makes it tough, adding that there are still millions of dollars being made on the crowd-funding service, if the pitch is right. He used the example of Keiji Inafune's Mighty No. 9 as an example of high-profile projects getting funded.

"There was a Fallout audience that loved one and two, and they wanted something more like that than where Fallout 3 and New Vegas went. Not that those are bad, but they wanted a more tactical, isometric, post-apocalyptic role-playing game. In that particular case, it hadn't been done.

"Now if somebody came up with another one after us, it wouldn't do as well, I think, because we would have been scratching that itch."

Fargo also touched on the risk involved with each project, saying that once the developer delivers the final game, it creates trust and helps with raising funds for future projects, something which Fargo said inXile would do again.

inXile Entertainment has been one of the early few developers that have launched very successful projects on Kickstarter, Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera both raised and exceeded their funding goals. Wasteland 2 is set to launch in August with most of its development team already moving to Torment: Tides of Numenera.
