Arcade games Centipede and Missile Command to be made into films

Atari has partnered with Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films (EFO) to develop movies based on the classic arcade titles, according to Deadline.

"Centipede and Missile Command are part of Atari’s unparalleled and rich library of popular games and we cannot wait to see the movies come to life," Atari CEO Fred Chesnais said in a statement.

Previous EFO films include Finding Rin Tin Tin, The Wicker Man, Room Service, Extraction, The Last Witch Hunter, and the latest film from Martin Scorsese, Silence, which is in post-production.

This isn't the first Atari classic to have a film in the pipeline. In 2009, Universal Studios - which released the Battleship (Hasbro) film - acquired the rights make an Asteroids film. Last we heard in 2012, it was still a thing.

Atari went looking for studios to develop a film project for the game in 2010 and signed a rights deal with 20th Century Fox in 2011. And now, EFO will produce and finance it. I can see Missile Command having potential, in that it would be easy to write a backstory. It features weapons and cities being destroyed after all. So, there's your action film.

With Centipede, for some reason, I imagine some sort of Godzilla type film where the creature grew to the size of a small city because of radiation.

To combat the centipede, the army implants a bomb in the center of the massive arthropod only instead of killing it, it splits in half and the two pieces come back to life. The military continues to bomb the thing like idiots, and each time a smaller, yet still extremely large, nasty becomes a new enemy to contend with.

And if that weren't enough, their giant radioactive brothers-in-arms, the scorpions and spiders, join the battle after hearing the centipede bellow in pain. And we can't forget the giant fleas. Surely they would be easier to dispatch. Just fill a crop duster with Frontline or some other flea medicine and spray the bastards.

I have no idea how the mushrooms would factor in, but I am sure the writers could come up with some use for them.
