Apple passes 50 billion App Store downloads since 2008

Apple is celebrating over 50 billion App Store downloads worldwide since the store launched in 2008.

That's 800 apps downloaded every single second, by the way. The figure doesn't take into account re-downloads or version updates, so yes, that's 50 billion new downloads in five years - or two billion a month - which is quite staggering when you think about it.

In a statement put out today - via GI.biz - Apple's Eddy Cue said, "Apple would like to thank our incredible customers and developers for topping 50 billion apps downloaded," said Apple's Eddy Cue.

"The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers. We're absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years."

The site adds that the 50 millionth download was 'Say the Same Thing' by Space Inch, which was bought by Brandon Ashmore of Ohio, who received a $10,000 App Store gift token as a result.

Well played that man.
