Apple focusing on exclusives to challenge mobile opposition from Amazon and Google - report
Apple is reportedly switching it stance on content acquisition as the iPad firm faces new challenges from Google's suite of Android-enabled devices and a potential new threat in the form of Amazon's Fire TV service.
We reported on the Amazon Fire TV reveal earlier this month. The announcement of the $99 games and movie device followed Amazon's acquisition of Killer Instinct developer Double Helix Games, suggesting that it's getting into original, exclusive gaming.
Now, the Wall Street Journal reports that these players are now locked in an exclusivity race to ensure their format has dedicated content, and are now courting developers to secured platform and timed exclusive releases.
It writes, “For Apple, the push to secure exclusive games challenges a long-standing policy of leaving decisions about which apps its App Store promotes to an ‘editorial team’ that tests the software, without taking business considerations into account,”
“As Android's influence has grown, Apple's editorial team has been factoring in exclusivity to a greater degree after it deems an app to be attractive, according to people familiar with the process. The editorial team also will give greater consideration to titles recommended by its developer-relations staff, they said.”
There's no hiding the fact that the mobile space is now becoming a heated arena with the emergence of Android and Amazon, but will the race for exclusive content bear fruit as intended? We'll keep our eyes on this one as it develops.
