App Store passes 25 billion downloads

The App Store promotion has drawn to a close with one lucky Apple fan taking home $10,000 in iTunes vouchers for being the one to download the 25 billionth app.

Apple will announce the winner at a later date on the competition's homepage.

Apple's service launched alongside the iPhone 3G in 2008, and totted up the staggering number of downloads in just over three and a half years. A natural extension to iTunes' popularisation of downloadable music, the App Store has since spread to Mac computers in addition to iOS devices.

The store now hosts over 500,000 apps - no word on how many are fart buttons and kama sutra viewers.

Thanks, TouchArcade.
