Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nook's Cranny Upgrade - how to expand the shop

After a while of settling into your vacation paradise, it can be easy to wonder what’s next? Even after you’ve rolled the credits, there are ways to upgrade Nook’s Cranny and improve your island’s shopping experience.

Here’s everything you need to know about expanding Nook’s Cranny, as well as what you can expect from Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ first upgraded shop.

How do you upgrade Nook’s Cranny in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Animal Crossing: New Horizons isn’t scared to make you wait for a lengthy period of real-world time.

Just as you had to stop playing, go to sleep, and wait through the night when Nook’s Cranny originally opened, you have to wait 30 real life days from the shop’s grand opening before it will upgrade.

You also need to have made over 200,000 bells worth of transactions to give Timmy and Tommy the capital to renovate - but this should be easy within the allotted time. You could do that from just one good stalk market turnip week.

If you’re short of bells, check out our money-making guide for some handy tips.

What happens after the Nook’s Cranny upgrade?

Although Timmy and Tommy’s store is a valuable resource for selling your items, its general stock can feel a little lacklustre.

Here’s everything you can look forward to when Nook’s Cranny upgrades:

  • Regular tools become available from the cabinet (not just flimsy ones)
  • More umbrellas, wallpapers, and floors on a rotation that changes every day
  • A new expensive furniture item at the back of the store in addition to the two big and two small items
  • A furniture item that matches the current season at the front of the shop

If you’re lazy like me and can’t be bothered to stock up on wood to keep your collection of tools high, then the option to quickly grab one from Nook’s Cranny is a nice - if expensive - convenience.

The most exciting things though are definitely the new furniture slots. The expensive position is where you tend to find big ticket electronic items like TVs and laptops, as well as large statement pieces.

While adding seasonal flair to your town and home is some of the best fun you can have in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so be sure to stock up on the cute seasonal items as well.

Also, one of the low-key great additions are the expanded purchasable floors and wallpapers, so you don’t have to grind out tickets with Saharah by buying a brown shaggy rug for the eighth time.
