Angry Birds Space debuts at no. 1, Rovio "working on" Windows Phone release
Angry Birds Space debuted yesterday, and automatically hit the number one position on the App Store, knocking the super, fun Draw Something off its cushy perch. The latest pig beat 'em up landed on iOS, PC, and Android.
An earlier Bloomberg report stated Rovio had no plans to release its latest title on Windows Phone 7, however, Rovio has said this is not the case at all and it's "working" on a version for WP7 now.
"[Angry Birds] is the number one app in the Windows Phone app store, but it's a big undertaking to support it, and you have to completely rewrite the application," Rovio's Peter Vesterbacka said according to Bloomberg.
"If you look at activations, Apple's iOS and Android are clearly bigger than any other platform. We want to be on all screens, but we have to consider the cost of supplying the smaller platforms. With Windows Phone it's a lot of work to technically support it."
Not releasing the game on Windows Phone, according to Nomura analyst Richard Windsor, is a worrying prospect - especially for Nokia - because it "suggests that Rovio does not have much confidence in its future."
Nokia is hoping the Windows Phone operating system will help its struggling smartphone business, but analysts are suggesting that if big hitters such as Angry Birds Space continue to skip Windows-based phones, it may be a hard road ahead.
However, all may not be lost for WP7 users after all, as clarification given to Reuters by Rovio CEO Mikael Hed hasd the firm "working towards getting Angry Birds Space to WP7."
