Ancel: Rayman Origins' move to retail due to "the way franchise works"

Michel Ancel has clarified why Rayman Origins made the jump to a retail release, saying it was how "the franchise works."

Speaking to MCV, series creator Ancel said that the content for Origins was just too much for it to remain as a downloadable title as it was previously planned.

"We moved to a boxed product because of the way that the Rayman franchise works," he said.

“In a Rayman game, you get all your powers and go back and revisit areas. It is like Zelda in that regard. And that format just isn’t compatible with an episodic download model.

"We didn’t want people to feel obliged to download each episode. So the structure of the game drove us to the boxed game.”

As well as that, Ancel said there was demand for a boxed copy of the game from fans of the series.

"A huge amount of people asked for a boxed game – Rayman fans were demanding it. Which is quite funny, when you consider what people say about the rise of downloads."

Rayman Origins launches later this year for PS3, 360 and Wii.
