Analyst believes Amazon job listings point to new Steam-like service

Due to some job postings over on Amazon, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian believes the online retailer is planning to expand it's online digital game download service to be a bit more like Steam's.

The job postings for "Designer, Digital Software and Video Games" and "Software Development Engineer, Digital Software and Video Games," point to something a bit more like a game client, according to Gamasutra.

"As in other segments of digital media, we expect Amazon to pursue new opportunities as an aggregator of online games, similar to Steam, BigPoint (browser) and others," said Sebastian, in an industry note.

"Amazon.com is developing an exciting new customer experience in video games," read one job description, while another cited the for "an experienced senior software engineer to lead the design and construction of next generation, breakthrough online video game and software distribution technology."

After purchasing casual online games service Reflexive in 2008, the retailer changed the name to Amazon Casual, which handles distribution through the web for PC. Amazon vice president of video games and software Greg Hart said at the time that the purchase was basically a good way for Amazon to get its feet wet.

"We'll learn about the space, and in the future you can expect we will expand our selection. Whether or not we go into core PC games is to be determined," he told Gamasutra at the time.

If it progresses, then there may be one more digi-distro client to choose from out of the Steam, Impulse, and D3D line-up.
