Amazon announces AppStream, a service that lets users stream games and apps to any device

Amazon has announced a new cloud-based service titled AppStream, that will enable developers to stream their applications and games in HD from the cloud to any capable device.

Very similar to other cloud services like OnLive and Sony's Gaikai, the service will be offloading the processing power needed to run games and applications into the cloud, which is later streamed to the user's device, the service will also stream some data back to the source.

The service was announced at Amazon's re:Invent conference last week and is said to allow developers to "build high-fidelity, graphically rich applications that run on a wide variety of devices, start instantly, and have access to all of the compute and storage resources of the AWS Cloud."

AppStream is aimed at mobile developers for the time being, but Techcrunch reports that any capable device, including desktops can use this service.

Amazon appears to be very interested in getting into the mobile space, this news comes only to give credence to the rumour that the firm is working on an Android-based console.
