A group of modders are bringing Battlefield Heroes back to life

Battlefield Heroes, the free-to-play Battlefield off-shoot from way back, has had a new lease on life.

A modding group called Revive has salvaged whatever code was left from when the game was active to create their own version. The game is currently in alpha, with a full launch expected soon.

Revive posted an hour-long gameplay video showing the game running pretty well. The fact that you won't have to worry about any microtransactions is a nice bonus, too.

The same group has actually done the same for Battlefield 2, and Battlefield 2142 (via Kotaku). The Battlefield Heroes portal is currently taking alpha sign-ups.

Battlefield Heroes launched in 2009 and was shutdown in 2015. The game was part of EA's Play 4 Free label, which also encompassed other free-to-play titles such as Battlefield Play4Free, Need for Speed World, and FIFA: World - all of which were also shutdown in the same year. The game featured a cartoony style that was very distinct, and at it's core was a more streamlined approach to the Battlefield formula.

It was supported by microtransactions, and third-party ads (back when EA was doing that). However, players quickly realised that the game's model wasn't very fair, and Heroes was often ridiculed for it.
