Sonic Prime, a new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series, hits Netflix in 2022
Netflix has announced a brand new 3D animated Sonic the Hedgehog show.
Sonic Prime is due to arrive on the streaming service at some point in 2022. The newly-announced project, which is described as a “24-episode animated adventure for kids, families, and long-time fans” will follow the eponymous blue hedgehog on a personal journey of introspection and discovery as he becomes tangled in the fate of a “strange new multiverse”.
“Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone's heart including my own," said Dominique Bazay, Director of original animation at Netflix. "I spent many hours with the blue blur as a kid and it's a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix -- one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy.”
Sonic Prime is a collaboration between SEGA, WildBrain Studio (which has handled the animation for projects like Carmen Sandiego, Ninjago, Mega Man: Fully Charged and more) and Man of Action Entertainment. The latter has previously worked with Disney Marvel's Avengers Assemble and Big Hero 6. So there's some real pedigree behind the series.
For anyone keeping track, this will be the first Sonic animated series since Sonic Boom, the meme-worthy show that enjoys something of a cult status amongst fans. Sonic Boom – which tied into a less well-received game series of the same name – ran from 2014 to 2017 before being canceled.
Expect more Sonic projects to be announced soon: earlier this year, we saw a new Sega ad has been printed that outlines 2021 as a ‘year of celebration’ for all things Sonic the Hedgehog. We're expecting to hear more about the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, too.
