Despite a free multiplayer mode, Resident Evil 3 is less popular than its predecessor on Steam
Resident Evil 3 couldn't beat Resident Evil 2 on Steam.
Resident Evil 3 officially launched on Friday worldwide, and its numbers on Steam have been decent - if not as big as Resident Evil 2's.
Over the weekend, Resident Evil 3 peaked at 60,293 concurrent players on Steam, well below Resident Evil 2's 74,227. Both of these figures were achieved at launch, and have yet to be topped.
On one hand, Resident Evil 2 is the more memorable, thus popular of the two so it makes sense for it to do better. On the other hand, Steam is currently witnessing all-time high player activity, and the current state of affairs could have boosted sales for Resident Evil 3 just because so many people worldwide are stuck at home.
There's also the fact Resident Evil 3 has a bonus multiplayer component in the form of Resident Evil Resistance, but that seemingly wasn't enough to convince players to grab the full game at launch. We don't have access to numbers on either console, so things may be better there. We won't find out for sure, however, until Capcom releases sales figures.
