Harley Quinn fans are going to war with Sonic on Twitter, because of course they are

Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog and the DC Comics movie universe are going to war on Twitter, because the world is stupid. Of course.

If you want your daily dose of stupid here it is: fans of DC Comics and the new Harley Quinn-led Birds of Prey movie have gone to war with Sonic the Hedgehog on Twitter, claiming the new Sonic movie contains racism and homophobic slurs, among other things.

We haven't yet seen the Sonic movie, but we're going to go ahead and guess the PG-Rated film isn't packed with gross and insulting stuff - but the Harley Quinn fans have a vested interest in denting Sonic's chances at the box office, as Birds of Prey has made its debut as the lowest-earning DC universe movie despite by all accounts being a pretty good time.

The response of the DC and Harley fanbase is to trash the next biggest movie coming out - that's Sonic - in the hopes that an audience driven away from that might give Birds of Prey a box office surge. Thus, the official Sonic Movie hashtag is flooded with people saying the film about a hyperactive super-powered hedgehog is racist and homophobic, and that parents should take their kids to see the R-rated Birds of Prey instead. Makes sense.

Sonic fans are now responding in kind, kicking back with tweets arguing just how wholesome Sonic is. Which he is (apart from when he kissed a human, obviously), but this is all very silly. Anyway, hit up the hashtags on Twitter if you want to lose some brain cells.

Sonic the Hedgehog is out in cinemas on Valentine's Day. The perfect date! We'll have a review on VG247 on release day, in our ongoing tradition of reviewing video game movies.
