Nioh has shipped 3 million copies worldwide

Koei Tecmo's Souls-style Samurai slasher Nioh has sold 3 million units since its February 2017 launch.

The initially PlayStation-exclusive game also had its numbers bolstered by a PC release in November 2017. Between the two, counting copies shipped to stores and direct digital sales to customers online, Nioh has now shipped over 3 million copies around the world - just in time for the game's 3rd birthday, which was yesterday.

Koei Tecmo celebrated the news with a tweet featuring some special artwork.

This milestone is of course important because Nioh 2 is on the way in just a little over a month. IN fact, we played the game a little while ago and published an in-depth Nioh 2 hands-on preview last week detailing how the sequel doesn't just resemble FromSoftware's Souls games, but also channels the 'push forward' combat of Doom 2016, but with a a blade, to encourage players to take on a more aggressive stance in battle.

The sequel will differ in a lot of ways, including doing away with set protagonist William to instead allow players to create a protagonist all of their own this time around. "Players all over the world can customise their characters to make them look like themselves if they like, or anything else, jumping into the story and enjoy the game as themselves," Team Ninja president Yosuke Hayashi told VG247. The character creator is one of many examples of Nioh 2 taking player feedback directly from the response to the first game and implementing it into the second.

Nioh 2 is due out on March 13, in a little over a month. The 3 million selling original is now frequently available at a hefty discount if you're yet to try it.
