The Joker arrives in Mortal Kombat 11 next month - and crossplay multiplayer is coming too
Mortal Kombat 11 continues to expand with updates and DLC - and the most recent additions are crossplay and a familiar face.
We've known that the DC Universe's Joker is coming to Mortal Kombat 11 for a while now - but now we have a date. The Joker will make another foray into the MK world on January 28.
The character's previous MK outing was in 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, a dedicarted cross-over game - so it's been a while. The date was revealed at The Game Awards, then later reiterated by the official MK channels on twitter. The Harley Quinn you see in here is a previously-released DLC costume for Cassie Cage, by the way.
If the Joker isn't enough for you, that's not the only major Mortal Kombat 11 update to be revealed this week - it's also been confirmed that the brutal fighter is adding crossplay support via patch. This will essentially allow PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners to battle each other online - but only in unranked, casual matches. User accounts, progression and unlocks will remain tied to your platform of choice.
The crossplay is limited to PS4 and Xbox One for now - so that means the PC, Google Stadia and Nintendo Switch versions of MK11 can't get in on the action, and there's no word if they ever will be able to. The feature is currently in a beta form, but will roll out to all players as it's gradually improved.
Players can get into crossplay - or krossplay, as the game officially calls it (of course) - in one of two ways. When matchmaking casual matches online if you've toggled crossplay on you'll automatically be matched against the best player for you regardless of if they hail from the green side or the blue side. In addition, there'll be crossplay-specific lobbies where players can meet across platform lines. This is how the game is facilitating friends who might want to play together - they can agree to meet in a specific room.
