Ryan Reynolds plays a man who discovers he is living in a GTA-style video game in Free Guy

Ryan Reynolds’ next film will see the actor play a hapless banker who discovers he is living in a video game.

In Free Guy, which is slated to arrive in cinemas next summer, Reynolds will play a bank teller who finds he is actually a non-playable character in an open world video game known as Free City. And unfortunately for him, the game is scheduled to soon go offline.

From the look of it, Free City itself is an amalgum of open-world multiplayer games - most prominently GTA Online. In the trailer below, Reynolds meanders through a city where explosions and shoot-outs are an every day occurence.

"Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way," reads the film's synopsis, "before it is too late."

Directed by Shawn Levy, best known for his work as both a director and producer on Stranger Things, Free Guy also stars Stranger Things alumni Joe Keery, the glorious Jodie Cormer of Killing Eve fame, and Taika Waititi.

Free Guy will hit theaters July 3, 2020.
