Dragon Quest Builders 2 multiplayer - does it have split-screen? How to play online
One of the biggest new features in Dragon Quest Builders 2 is multiplayer, but the game doesn’t do a great job of explaining how it works.
When you first boot it up, you might assume that the whole story is playable in co-op, since you have Malroth as a companion throughout. Surely you just connect up a second controller and press start, right? Unfortunately not.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 split-screen
Dragon Quest Builders 2 does not have split-screen functionality at all. Multiplayer is handled online and you can only play it online under specific circumstances. Here’s how it works.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 multiplayer
If you want to play Dragon Quest Builders 2 multiplayer, you need to progress through the story first. Get the tutorial done on the pirate ship, travel to the Island of Awakening and do the first island quests with the farm at Furrowfield.
Keep progressing through the story and eventually you’ll unlock the multiplayer portal. This sits on the Island of Awakening not far from where your boat is moored on the beach. To access it, simply go up and interact with the portal.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 multiplayer can only be played with friends, or friends of friends, and you can only play it on your Island of Awakening. Choose to go online and Malroth will vanish. From here you can invite friends. You can also open it up to friends of friends. Once you’ve successfully invited someone, you’re free to build together in your very own sandbox.
Make sure you check the multiplayer options as well, since you can toggle a bunch of stuff, including limiting the use of explosives. If you don’t trust your friends not to undo all your hard work, though, maybe don’t invite them in the first place.
