Twitch trans charity stream found support from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, John Romero, and more
YouTuber raises over £230,000 for UK trans charity Mermaids after its National Lottery funding came under review.
Hbomberguy, a.k.a. Harry Brewis, has just come off the back of a charity Twitch stream that raised $340,000/ £233,490 for Mermaids, a UK charity that works to "raise awareness about gender nonconformity in children and young people amongst professionals and the general public."
Eurogamer reports that Brewis was inspired by Father Ted and The IT Crowd writer, Graham Linehan, who expressed his opposition to the organisation, saying that it pushes an “extreme ideological agenda” (via the Independent).
The charity stream saw Harris take on the personal challenge of beating Donkey Kong 64, which he successfully completed with a final time of 57h 48m 32s.
"I chose Mermaids specifically because when they were designated some funding by the National Lottery, Graham Linehan...went on Mumsnet and told them to email a lady from the National Lottery en masse and now the funding is under review," he explains in the video announcing the stream.
Brewis hosted a number of celebrity guests over Discord during the stream, including US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Doom co-creator John Romero, Jim Sterling, and video game composer and the voice of Donkey Kong 64's DK, Grant Kirkhope.
All subs and Twitch bits will also be going to Mermaids, with Brewis adding that "any subs that remain after will go towards a fund for trans, nonbinary and others who need direct help."
You can watch the full stream on Twitch if you have a spare 58 hours, or you can check out the clips featuring the pantheon of celebrity guests right here.
