Annual Diablo 3: The Darkening of Tristram retro event is live

Diablo 3’s retro event, Darkening of Tristram, has returned.

Diablo 3: The Darkening of Tristram is an annual event which has occurred in January since 2017.

If you're unfamiliar with the event, a group of cultists are causing problems in Sanctuary, and you are tasked with hunting them down in Adventure Mode. Doing so will provide clues which point toward a portal to Tristram’s past.

The cultists started appearing in-game on December 31, and the portal to the Kingdom of Khanduras is now open. Stepping inside takes you into the bowels of the Cathedral where it all started with Diablo.

Entering the Cathedral in the town of Tristram takes you below the city to face randomly generated dungeon levels. Along with other denizens, there are three main bosses to content with before entering Hell to face the fourth and final boss, Diablo, the Lord of Terror.

All four main bosses from the original game are included: The Butcher, Skeleton King, Lazarus, and Diablo.

The development team recreated the events, monsters, and all 16 levels from the entire, original game. This includes the ‘retro’ graphics filters, ‘90s-inspired audio, eight-direction character movement, and even a lowered frame rate of up to 25%.

PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One users can participate in the Diablo 3: Darkening of Tristram event now through January 31 at 4pm PST, 7pm EST in North America. It ends February 1 in the UK at 12am.

You can find more details on the event through the official Diablo 3 website.
