Assassin's Creed Odyssey Horse Guide: Which horse should you choose? Where can you find skins for Phobos?

The Classical Greek World in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is huge, and that means you’re going to need the help of a noble steed to trot, canter, and gallop through forests, valleys, and mountain ranges alike. Here’s everything you need to know about your horse in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, include which to choose at the start of the game, and where to find new cosmetic horse skins.

Which horse should you choose at the start of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey?

Early on in your adventure when you meet Markos at his freshly-acquired vineyard, he’ll give you a choice between three horses: one he says is best-suited to mountainous terrain, one bred for battle, and the other is a “true warrior’s horse”.

Really though, across all of our playthroughs, we haven’t noticed any difference in the speed, climbing ability, skittishness, or stamina of any of these horses that you can pick.

This means you can choose any that you like the look of, as it will have no bearing over how you play the rest of the game.

What’s more, your horse will always be called Phobos. So don’t worry about missing out on different names either.

Where to find cosmetic horse skins in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

If you’re not totally happy with the look of your equine chum, you can buy horse skins from merchants and the Helix Store which you can equip to change the colour and appearance of your horse.

The most common place that you can find horse skins for sale is at Blacksmiths in most large settlements. The skins that they sell change periodically, and can differ in rarity, up to Epic.

If you fancy buying a horse skin from a Blacksmith, I’d recommend waiting until you unlock the tier 8 Mercenary reward. This will make Blacksmiths reduce all of their prices by 20%, saving you heaps of Drachmae on more expensive skins.
