Gears of War 5 features local split-screen and online co-op - out next year
Gears of War 5, stylized just as 'Gears 5' by the developers, was announced today during Microsoft's Xbox E3 2018 briefing.
Gears 5 is being developed by The Coalition, the team behind Gears of War 4. The game will be released on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC, and will continue on from the cliffhanger ending of the previous game.
The Xbox E3 2018 announcement isn't a surprise at all, considering a Walmart Canada listing leaked it in May.
You'll play as Kait this time, meaning that this new Gears series might have you switching protagonists more regularly. The game can be played solo or with a friend in local split-screen co-op, or online co-op and experience every mode in 4K Ultra HD resolution at "a smooth 60 frames per second."
Marcus is also shown returning in the trailer, which is great - we'd miss the old dude if he wasn't around. The trailer shows off the environments you'll be exploring more than the gameplay mechanics, so we're not sure if this one is going to switch things up in any significant way.
Like its predecessor, Gears of War 5 is a Xbox Play Anywhere title, playable across Xbox One and Windows 10 accounts. It will also be made available on Xbox Game Pass when it releases.
Gears 5 is out in 2019, but we're not sure when, exactly.
Also revealed during Microsoft's conference was some sort of Gears of War / Pop Vinyl crossover game for mobiles, which deserves kudos for being a pretty great fake-out troll before the Gears 5 trailer played.
