A brand new Battletoads game is coming to Xbox One next year
The Battletoads are making their extremely-long awaited return next year, and will be console-exclusive on Xbox.
Microsoft announced the next game in the series during their Xbox E3 2018 briefing today, revealing that a new Battletoads will launch in 2019. It will be a 2.5D game with hand-drawn 4K graphics. It'll be a brand new game, so don't expect a remake - although it looks like the infamous vehicle levels will return.
All the talk of "soft complacency" in the trailer below gives us the impression that this game is going to be difficult, as a good Battletoads should be. Three-player co-op is, of course, a given.
Aside from this there are scant few details to pick from the trailer, which doesn't show any gameplay. 'Body morphing genre mash-ups' presumably means that the toads' fists and feet will grow and reshape themselves during combos, as per the older games in the series, which is neat.
The Battletoads have had a mini resurgence in this console generation, appearing in the third season of Killer Instinct, the Xbox One version of Shovel Knight, and as part of the Rare Replay collection. This will be their first all-new game since 1994's Battletoads Arcade.
Battletoads are owned by Rare Studios, but the logo for developer Dlala Studios also pops up at the end. They're perhaps best known for the brawler 'Overruled'. Rare has confirmed, via Twitter, that Dlala will be developing the title.
Hopefully we'll find out more about Battletoads soon - fans have been waiting a long time for this.
