Hideo Kojima fans suspect Death Stranding is set in Iceland
Fans have been digging into possible Death Stranding easter eggs, and have a theory the game will be set in Iceland.
Hideo Kojima strikes us as a guy who enjoys teasers and easter eggs. (I mean, come on, that's about 85% of the appeal behind P.T.) So it's only natural that fans have been dissecting Death Stranding promotions for clues on what to expect.
So far, an interesting theory has emerged - that the finished game will ultimately take place in Iceland.
The evidence, helpfully compiled by the folks at Eurogamer, certainly makes some sense. It starts with Kojima's tweet of moss covered ground, which one fan noticed resembles old Icelandic lava fields. This also raises the possibility that Death Stranding's trailers may have depicted a lava beach this entire time.
Then there's the music behind the trailers. Each score is produced by a band called Low Roar, which are based out of Iceland. What's more, Kojima first encountered their music while visiting a record store in Reykjavík, Iceland. Kojima was location scouting for a Konami project at the time, and since he clearly isn't with Konami anymore, perhaps it inspired this independent game.
The Iceland connections even extend to Death Stranding's game engine, Decima. Created by Guerrilla Games for Horizon Zero Dawn, the promotional materials for Decima include a photograph of Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach located in - you guessed it - Iceland.
Kojima has spent enough time in Iceland for the environment to at least inspire his designs. But the director has been retweeting some of these theories on his account, so perhaps there's more to this than it seems. Hopefully we'll find out whenever he releases Death Stranding's next super confusing trailer.
