Thanos came to Fortnite because Avengers: Infinity War directors play the game a lot
The Fortnite-Avengers: Infinity War mashup is something players could only dream of, and it took fans of the game at Marvel to get it done.
Those being Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who say they played a lot of Fortnite in between editing sessions.
"We started thinking, how cool would it be to have some kind of Avengers–Fortnite mashup? So we stalked Donald [Mustard]," Joe Russo told Entertainment Weekly.
Epic Games creative director Donald Mustard got a call from Joe, and they started "brainstorming these crazy ideas." "About an hour later, we had the bones of this awesome idea for a limited time gameplay mode, and almost immediately our team got started," Mustard recalled.
"It was really important that whatever we did, it had to be super authentic to both Fortnite and the Avengers: Infinity War, and something that fans of both would be excited about."
Thanos' implementation in Fortnite does indeed do his powerful character justice. This could have easily just been a skin, but Epic instead took it the whole way with the addition of a limited-time game mode that lets you become Thanos, and use the Infinity Gauntlet to wield its powers.
"This kind of opportunity, where you have this mutual respect for someone’s work and you’re on the same page about doing something cool for fans, is rare and really exciting. We hope players love it," added Epic's creative lead.
If you've yet to get your hands on the Infinity Gauntlet, there's still time. With the help of these tips, you will hopefully become Thanos and run around smashing everyone.
There's more going on in Fortnite this week that doesn't have to do with Thanos, such as the Week 2 Challenges, and the second drop of Twitch content for Prime subscribers.
