EA created an AI that taught itself how to play Battlefield 1 multiplayer

EA's neural network has taught itself how to play Battlefield 1, and the publisher showed a video of the achievement at GDC 2018.

EA's Search for Extraordinary Experiences Division, or SEED for short, was first revealed at E3 2017. The division is tasked with advancing machine learning and AI to prepare EA for the future.

All big companies have similar divisions, but what's interesting is that EA has shown that its AI can play Battlefield 1 multiplayer. These AI agents, as EA calls them, taught themselves how to play the game.

EA released a footage of the match, and it does look impressive. You'll notice green and yellow boxes, which the AI use for health and ammo resupply respectively. This is the only aid EA gave them, the rest is being handled entirely by a single neural network which controls all soldiers.

EA says the network learned through trial and error. EA "encouraged" them to play the objective, which they definitely do in the video. That said, it's not without issues.

Towards the end of the video, the soldiers seem a bit confused, running in circles around one another. They also don't seem to have learned how to aim down sights yet, though that'll surely come with time.
