Destiny 2: here's a look at the Coldheart Exotic Trace Rifle you get when pre-ordering

There's a new Destiny 2 Exotic in town, and it's an interesting Trace Rifle.

Those who pre-order Destiny 2 will be handed early access to the Coldheart Exotic Trace Rifle.

Later this year on December 5, it will be made available to other players.

If you were one of those who pre-ordered the game to gain early access to the Destiny 2 beta, you're also getting this super neat Exotic.

According to Destiny 2 writer Jill Scharr, the Coldheart Exotic Trace Rifle was developed at the Omolon Foundry, which wanted to create a weapon that uses liquid as ammunition. This liquid also works as a coolant for the rifle.

The weapon fires a straight, precision beam which players will need to hold on target for an extended amount of time. There's still some high recoil to it, so players will need to keep it stable while on target.

The longer the laser is held on the target, the more Precision damage it will do over time.

Bungie told IGN it will take skill to master the weapon, and to become super effective with it, players will need to learn how to control it and familiarize themselves with "how it behaves in the sandbox."

The studio said Coldheart will be the first, and only Trace Rifle in Destiny 2 players' hands and it has the "potential to become a new archetype."

There's a few nuances to the weapon and its design you may have missed, but Arekkz goes over all of those and more in his video on the Coldheart Exotic.

Plenty of other Exotics will be made available in the game, obviously, so expect some interesting weapons at launch and to be released for the game throughout its lifetime.

Destiny 2 releases on consoles September 6 and on PC in October.
