Kingdom Hearts 3 Toy Story world shown off in new trailer, Nomura talks multiple playable characters
Kingdom Hearts 3 remains as solid as morning mist, but here are some new details on it anyway.
A new Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer was released at D23 Expo, Disney's fan convention.
For some reason, Square Enix has elected to block most of the action in the first minute with scrolling cut out letters that are difficult to read. We got very excited thinking this was a secret message, but it's immediately followed by a title card with the full quote: "Don't assume your dreams are just fantasy. If you can imagine a world, believe in it and dive in." With that done, we get to the meat of the Kingdom Hearts 3 news: there's a Toy Story world this time.
For a real headtrip, compare this footage to the original Toy Story. Wild.
There seems to be a lot of plot happening in the trailer, but we'll have to wait for the English version to find out what it is. The end of the trailer suggests Kingdom Hearts 3 will release in 2018, something we won't believe until we have it in our hands, and maybe not even then. After all, hallucinations are a thing.
IGN spoke to Kingdom Hearts 3 director Tetsuya Nomura during the event and scooped some sweet new information, including a promise that the game will feature at least one other playable character in addition to Sora.
"There is an intention of adding a playable character aside from Sora. Unfortunately we’re not able to disclose who it is yet, but there will be [another playable character]," Nomura said.
Previous Kingdom Hearts games have included segments where players took control of characters other than Sora, so this isn't enormous news, but it's still good to know.
Nomura also said that Kingdom Hearts 3 will allow players to bring more than two companion characters into battle with them, a pleasant side effect of moving onto newer hardware.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming to PS4 and Xbox One, or possibly PS9 and Xbox Minus 1800, depending on when it finally condenses out of the vapour.
