Dark Souls 3: how to turn into a dragon
Before you read on, know that this page will contain heavy spoilers. We're going to bring up a late-game boss, various pieces of lore, as well as items and character quests. Turn back now if you've yet to defeat The Dancer of the Boreal Valley boss.
In Dark Souls 3, there's a running theme of characters becoming obsessed with the dragon form, spending their life dedicated to becoming dragons.
As you've probably gleaned from boss fights like Oceiros, the Consumed King as well as the various corpses/enemies in the Irithyll Dungeon, parts of the world of Dark Souls 3 believe dragons possess the most pure of forms.
There are a number of items you can get in the game that allow you to turn your torso and head into that of a dragon. These items are the Dragon Torso Stone, the Twinkling Dragon Torso Stone, the Dragon Head Stone, and the Twinkling Dragon Head Stone.
All of these can be used as many times as you want, but the Twinkling versions offer more moves. You should also know that you don't need all of them to see the effects, either one will still work.
The Dragon Torso Stone
This is the first one you'll come across. You will find a skeleton/statue of a meditating dragon in an open area at Irithyll Dungeon holding this item. Simply pick it up and you'll be on your way.
The Dragon Head Stone
You get this one after defeating the Ancient Wyvern boss in in Archdragon Peak, one of the game's secret areas. If you don't know how to reach the area, see this guide page.
In short, you need the Path of the Dragon emote, which you find a few steps after defeating Oceiros, the Consumed King boss.
The Twinkling Dragon Torso Stone
If you're familiar with Archdragon Peak, you'll know that near the end of the level, there's a climb that concludes with a cliff and a stone coffin. If you go there and perform the Path of the Dragon Emote, you'll be given the Twinkling Dragon Torso Stone.
The Twinkling Dragon Head Stone
The next time you return to the Firelink Shrine, talk to Hawkwood the Deserter and make sure to exhaust all his dialogue options. Leave the area and travel back to the Shrine (assuming you have the Twinkling Torso Stone) and talk to blacksmith Andre, he's going to relay a message left by Hawkwood.
You then need to travel to the Abyss Watchers bonfire, where you're going to find Hawkwood waiting to fight you. If you fight him and win, you'll be rewarded with the Twinkling Dragon Head Stone, the final stone.
If you lose the fight and die, he'll take your Twinkling Dragon Torso Stone. You can come back later to defeat him and take both stones.
How to use the Dragon Torso Stone and Dragon Head Stone
All you need to do now is take off all of your armour, select any of the stones in your inventory and use them. Your form will change into that of a dragon, and won't be reverted until you die.
You can also add the items to your quick use menu, and continue using them to see their effects. The Twinkling versions of the stones offer extra attacks, as mentioned above.
Moves vary. Between them you'll perform a dragon breath, summon two large dragon fangs to attack, do a battle cry and more.
You can still use your weapons in this form, not to mention you're going to have increased resistances to various damage types.
