Destiny: The Taken King will tell a sweeping story of vengeance-fuelled invasion, but let's face it - most Guardians are in it for the sweet new loot. Creative director Luke Smith acknowledges this wryly in a new vidoc on The Taken King, embedded below. Watch for it.

The video shows off how the Taken, commanded by Oryx, will interrupt battles, replacing your current foes with souped-up versions. It also gives us a first look at Oryx's Dreadnought, an all new Destination.

Players will have to explore the huge floating castle, hunting down Oryx, and solving environmental puzzles to discover secret locations. They'll also, of course, be robbing the Hive blind on the way.

Details of the three new subclasses and supers are includes, too. As suspected, the new Hunter Void subclass, the Nightstalker, is intended as a support class; at present, the Hunter is the only class without controlling abilities.

The Warlock Arc subclass, the Stormcaller, is all about damage. The Titan Solar subclass, Sunbreaker, is another damage class. You'll notice that these two new supers grant mobile, sustained supers like the Hunter's Bladedancer super, Arc Blade.

We also get a look at two new Crucible modes. Mayhem is like team deathmatch mode but "turned up to 11" and Rift is a twist on capture the flag.

The expansion also adds new Strikes, Patrols, Public Events, Exotics, Legendaries, "progress for characters", environmental hazards, a Raid. Existing content will be rejigged, too.

The Taken King launches on September 15. If you own Destiny and both existing DLC packs, you can purchase it as a digital upgrade, and receive a few loyalty goodies. Otherwise, it's available in a bundle with Destiny Year One as Destiny: The Taken King Legendary Edition. There's also a Collector's Edition full of physical loot and digital goodies (which those who upgrade digitally will also receive).
