Alan Wake 2 still on the cards at Remedy
Alan Wake could still get a proper sequel.
"We are in a place where we are starting to have discussions about what is next. We are discussing the possibility of an Alan Wake sequel with multiple partners. I would love to do that."
Alan Wake developer Remedy has always planned on adding to the series.
"For Alan Wake, from the get-go, we assumed there was going to be a sequel and we mapped things further out when it came to character, story, details and focus changes," Remedy creative director Sam Lake told Polygon.
"Near the end of Alan Wake, we were sitting down and talking about the sequel and where we should be taking it, on a detailed level. More or less straight from getting Alan Wake shipped, we were working on a sequel and planning on a sequel."
The sequel would have included a new mechanic whereby players could rewrite the world around them, and continue the story from the cliffhanger ending of the original.
Unfortunately this sequel, and most of the other projects Remedy had in mind for the Alan Wake universe, didn't materialise. Remedy pitched the sequel to publishers with a concept video based on a prototype, but it didn't take. The prototype, and other internal builds, were later cannibalised for other projects.
Lake said some time ago that it wasn't the right time for a sequel, but in this new interview confirmed that he wants to work on it one day - maybe when Quantum Break wraps.
"We are in a place where we are starting to look into the future and starting to have discussions about what is next," he said.
"Among other things, we are discussing the possibility of an Alan Wake sequel with multiple partners, but nothing has been decided.
"I would love to do that. It feels that time has only refined the ideas of what the sequel would be, which is great. It's almost, in some ways and on some level, that all of this extra time to think it about it has made it tastier and more exciting."
Polygon has video footage of the prototype; check it out while you're over there reading the rest of the interview, which has loads more interesting stuff for fans.
The original Alan Wake was a critical darling and bestseller, releasing in 2010 as an Xbox 360 exclusive before coming to PC in 2012. It was followed by downloadable spin-off called Alan Wake's American Nightmare.
Remedy is also responsible for the first two Max Payne games, a number of mobile titles and the upcoming Xbox One exclusive Quantum Break.
