Why The Crew isn't coming to PS3

The Crew is coming to Xbox 360 in addition to PC, PS4 and Xbox One - but not PlayStation 3. Why?

The Crew is an ambitious game with an incredibly large open world, so we never really expected it to be ported to the last generation of consoles.

So yesterday's announcement that The Crew is coming to Xbox 360 was something of a surprise - but surprise was quickly replaced by disgruntlement among PS3 owners. Why not them, too?

Ubisoft has an answer: it's just easier on the PC-like Xbox 360.

"The Crew was originally built for the new generation of consoles, so when we made the decision to port it to the previous generation, we decided to focus solely on the platform closest to the new-gen's technical infrastructure, which is the Xbox 360," an Ubisoft representative said in a statement to Kotaku.

Oh. You know, that makes a lot more sense than the reasons I came up with yesterday in a fit of tinfoil-hate conspiracy theorising. The PS3's complicated (but rewarding) architecture is widely recognised - that's why Sony was so careful to make the PS4 easy to work with.

Of course, this isn't entirely satisfactory, and PS3 owners have a right to feel disappointed. "We can't be bothered because it is hard" is not exactly conciliatory. But Ubisoft is a business, and I'm sure if it felt it could justify the investment in the more difficult PS3 port, it would - it's not like it wants you not to buy its games, right?

The Crew is a multiplayer online racer, and it's due in November. In case you're wondering what we've been talking about this whole article.
