13 year old Steam promise fulfilled with Impossible Creatures release
This promise is so old it is in the eighth grade and wants to get its septum pierced.
Way, way, way back when Steam was just a much-dreaded gleam in Valve's eye and not, you know, nearly the totality of mainstream PC gaming, we were promised something.
That something was Impossible Creatures, an RTS from Company of Heroes developer Relic filled with all sorts of rad hybrid animals. Valve chose this game to demonstrate Steam at a GDC presentation.
Just like that time Halo was a Mac exclusive, the demo never bore fruit - until now. After a modest non-Steam launch and a decade of relative obscurity, Impossible Creatures finally arrived on Steam overnight. You can buy it now for $6 thanks to a 40% launch discount from its usual $10 ticket price.
I wrote quite a lengthy games industry fan fiction about why this happened involving a stern meeting between Relic and new parent Sega, but it turns out Nordic Games is responsible, presumably thanks to its job lot THQ auction purchases.
