   So what age are you guys and what age do you think you'll game until?

   Im approaching 31 and I don't find it as easy to get in to a game as i used to... even when i was 20 odd's it was easy to turn the lights off, suspend disbelief and get sucked in to the world and atmosphere of a game. These days cheesy dialogue and bad acting can crush my enjoyment of a game far too easily. Also stupid things like not being able to holster my weapon in a public place (RAGE), wearing a disguise one second then being dressed in a suit in a video scene (Hitman Absolution) or following a marker and not being entirely sure why I'm doing it all break my engrossment. Is this my age?? Am I becoming harder to please?? And most importantly... does any of this happen to you guys??

   Obviously I'd like to think I'll be able to game as long as I can, and as the industry matures less people are going to think games are only for teenagers and we're going to see more truly adult titles. So people... what's your take on this??

   Iam 36 , and will be 37 this coming saturday, i think i will game till my eyes and hands let me do it, if it is 97 yo, 97 yo it will be Godwilling.

   As for the teeneaters/kids target of the industry, i dont have a problem my inner kid is alive and kicking, and i dont mind it, surely i really appreciate mature themes and topics, as much as the next guy, but i dont mind playing gears of war or god of war or mario galaxy, i think i can live with that type of gaming forever, and ever.

   Yep to all those.

   Same age too (31).

   It's why it makes me laugh reading people like Erth's comments where he goes on and on about graphics yet we are still playing the same game from the PS2 / Xbox gameplay wise.

   Hence why I always return to Nintendo, or at least have one Nintendo console.

   When I get bored of the same old, same old, something like Mario Galaxy or Animal Crossing helps me to remember why I enjoy gaming.

   So, yeah, looking forward to new consoles but very apprehensive about the quality of the gameplay experiences. I just don't want COD gameplay in 1080p...

   You should try a Wii U lol :)

   I am in my 50s.

   I can tell you that it does get tuffer the older you get. What you want from a game changes. Or at lest it did for me. Too many games are still being aimed squarly at 15-25 year old males, imo. To me mature doesn't mean swearing, showing T&A, and evicerating something. Actualy just the oppesite.

   Also at some point I got that feeling that I had played everything there was to play. Think of a genere, I have played it to death. Lest that is the way it feels.

   My skills aren't what they used to be either. While I can out think most of the kids playing battlefield, when it come to more twitch based shooters like CoD and Halo, I can't compete. I am just not that fast. Hence why I like the larger maps, the vehicles, the deeper strategy in a BF game over CoD. That isn't a plug for BF, so much as an example. The samething applies to most games.

   I used to love Warcraft(the RTS one), but now I have to play Civ because it is turn based. It slows the game down so I can make the best move and not feel rushed.

   I can't play most racing games, they are too damn fast. Stuff like Need For Speed Hot Pursuit. Loved the idea, but I can't control even the meduim level cars anymore. I once saw a study on modernday(a few years ago, maybe 5) that said most games accelerate the games speed so the cars would actualy be moving around 450miles per hour if they moved as fast in real life as they do in the games. I just can't control that.

   All of that leads me to wonder the samething you do Triggerhappy. At what point do I hang up my controlers and move on? The best answer I can come up with is when it stops being fun. And for the most part I still enjoy gaming.

   I think it would be nice if the industry figured out that yesteryears Atari gamers are all adults now. And that the user base is getting older all of the time. At some point there will be millions of long time gamers in their 50s and 60s. Right now if you are in your 50s you are indeed an oldergamer. I have seen people older then that playing, but mostly folks in their 40s and 50s are pioneers.

   I think there is a large and not yet fully emerged audiance of older gamers out there. And I don't know about anyone else but I am not into the so called Grandma/Grandpa style games. There is still a core gamer waiting to be fed. it is just that most trip A mainstream stuff doesn't even scratch the itch for me anymore.

   I end up playing a lot of PC. Alot of indie games. I like to invest in cheaper games because there is less risk/reward, if it is crap I lose 10usd instead of 60usd. I enjoy SP more then MP, and co-op over competitive. I enjoy Nintendo games, inpart because they aren't trying to impress a 17yr virgin teenage guy by showing off a scantly clad vixen with an impossible figure or attempting to win over the DudeBros by splatering blood across the screen. And in part because when the NES was out I was a lot younger and those games conect with me. Nostalga for the win I guess.

   But you are only 30/31 yrs old. You have years to enjoy gaming, but dollors to dougnuts the types of games you enjoy change. And maybe even the amount of time/money you invest drops. But there will almost gaurenteed to always be a gamer inside you.

   I'm 27 and I'm pretty much at the same point as Triggerhappy.

   I'm spending a lot more time with indies and mobile games. For me the whole pull of games is all about the sense of wonder and doing something out of the ordinary, and way too few games even try these days.

   I do feel like games are stuck in a rut. It takes maybe an hour to know how a AAA game is going to go, often a lot less, and that's really down to the fact that the last one played by almost exactly the same rules. That just makes it a lot less stimulating as a whole.

   So I guess it's less about hanging up the controller and really just focusing on the devs that manage to keep it alive and interesting.

   I kinda hope that the downward spiral continues for the industry. It went off the rails a good while ago, and there are really a lot of practices being enforced that would never fly anywhere else. It's well overdue for an intervention.

   37 and counting. i feel absolutely the same. i feel like most so called "mature" games aren´t aimed at me. most of the time i can still enjoy them but not as much as i used to. i also think that i am getting worse in omp recently...i thought that was a myth, but the kids are really fast.
   i love gaming and i will play games as long as i can. good thing about gaming: you WILL be able to play them even if you get really really old. not oldergamerold, 50´s is nothing - we will all become 100+ these days. maybe i really cannot compete online anymore but there´s so much other stuff to enjoy. i am very optimistic about my future gaming time. i like nintendo as well for providing me with stuff that still makes me smile, but others are still making great games too. there´s a lot of crap out there but lots of true gems as well. it´s always like this in life isn´t it? i think the market for the oldergamer will expand in the near future, we will see some innovative and enjoyable stuff for our arthritic paws.

   I'm 28 and I have a feeling that games will be something I don't want to do anymore before I want to quit playing them..that doesn't really make sense does it? :D What I mean is, the way the industry is headed (imo), games will no longer be what I want them to be..so I'll probly just become uninterested in them. I started at 4yrs old with the NES. I grew up with games and they with me. But what started out as a "virtual toy" progressing to an "interactive experience", This Gen has seen the resurgence of the "arcade"..where "highscores", "achievements", and "kill to death ratios" have bought enough new blood to the industry causing it to become greedy. And budgets of gone up, causing games to become more "accessible"..mediocre is more like it. When you try to please everyone you end up pleasing no one. This Gen has marked the death of more than two IPs that I've always looked forward to. I think the industry has passed the envelope already sometime early this Gen , and as it begins to falter further the games that are produced are going to be less and less appealing to myself. I hope I'm wrong and am playing games forever thou :) time will tell.

    When I talk about franchise oversaturation(hurting the industry) and gamer fatigue, I can see it in some of these posts. It is funny on one hand this has been a tech marvel and one of the greatest gens of all time. On the other hand, alot of folks that I have talked to(offline)(and sometimes reflected here) share the same types of views. They are less excited about games going into the next gen, then they were heading into this one.

    I just turned 37 there in October, and I'm gaming more now than I ever did. BUT, I do care less and less about the kind of game where I have to spend a lot of time honing lightning reflexes and mad skills, in favour of games where I can think my way through, or use a good strategy or prepare myself with the right kit/character build.

    I reckon I'll be a gamer until I die, but the kind of games I like is gradually changing. I pray the day never dawns where I just play iPhone games...

    I think it's been one of the weakest generations. A lot of the big IPs are leftovers from the last one, and they haven't gotten a lot of new company.

    Technology has always been evolving, that's not unique to this generation. I think the difference is that the focus has been on production values instead of real craftsmanship, in terms of making games fundamentally interesting.

    I think milking the bigger franchises is going to pay off in the short term, and have a devastating effect in the long term. Prize pigs don't live forever (unlesss you're Nintendo) and it should be common sense to hedge your bets with something new.

    32 here.

    It goes in peaks and troughs for me. Just as I'm feeling that I'm losing my interest in gaming, a gem comes out that completely reignites my passion for 'em.

    My first bout of gaming doubt came during the previous gen - was growing tired of many franchises that I dearly loved during the 32 bit era. Then Resi 4 landed - I was so jaded with the franchise (and gaming in general), though having popped it in the Gamecube, I simply couldn't get out of my chair. I realised that I wasn't growing out of gaming; I really just needed a better game to play.

    I'm picky these days - can tell if I want to play something within ten odd minutes. I also tend to lean on games that I like a whole lot more. You'd have to literally pay me to play 90% of the big/lauded games out there. I wish I could fall back on Nintendo, though I grow increasingly tired of their cynical rehashes, and the desecration of once great franchises (Zelda in particular.)

    As I look towards the next gen, I'm looking for immersion above all else. Hope it can be pulled off. If not, I'll be back playing retro from yesteryear.

    I honestly think that this generation has been incredibly strong. Look what we got this generation (by which I loosely mean the last 6 years or so):

    Dead Space, Borderlands, Geometry Wars Galaxies, Red Dead Revolution, PixelJunk Shooter, Dishonored, Demon's Souls, Journey, Bioshock, Braid, Vanquish, Infamous, Uncharted, Fez, Wii Sports, Portal, Shadow Complex, The Walking Dead, Lumines, Darksiders, Bastion, Batman Arkham Asylum, From Dust, Heavy Rain...

    As far as I'm aware, all new IP, all this generation, and I'm mostly a PS3, Wii gamer, so I've probably missed tonnes of 360 and PC titles like Gears and The Witcher etc. That's pretty fucking good in my opinion...

    We also had loads of remakes and sequels too, which turned out pretty well:

    Excite Truck, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Skyrim, Super Mario Galaxy, Mass Effect 2, Castlevania: Lords of Shadows, Streetfighter IV, XCOM and so on...

    Plus, we still have Far Cry, Tomb Raider, Dark Souls II, Bioshock Infinite, Metal Gear Revengeance, Dead Space 3, Metro: Last light, The Last of Us, The Last Guardian (we can hope), Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, and BEYOND to look forward to...

    I know, I made the classic error of making a list, but however you look at it, this generation has had tonnes of fucking quality games. I really think that while games are gradually becoming 'safer', we still have fuck tonnes of legend games.

    Compare this to the previous generation, and I doubt you can list off so many new franchises and high quality games. I mean, there were some of the best games ever last generation (RE 4, Okami, Ico, Pikmin, Metroid Prime, etc.) but I think that this generation we had just as many insanely good games, and more besides.

    We are spoilt.

    No one said there weren't good games around.

    I'd still say that if you compare the list of the games available for something like a PS3 to the games available for the PS2, there's a world of difference there. It's not hard to find greats from that generation:

    Jak and Daxter, Oddworld, Ratchet and Clank, Shadow of the Colossus, GTA 3, GTA Vice City, Bully, Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, Prince of Persia, Black, Halo, Burnout, Prince of Persia, Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil, Katamari Damacy, God of War.

    The willingness to bet on new original IPs as single units instead of constantly trying to start a franchise with everything you do also plays a part. Assassins Creed may have been an alright game, but it doesn't exactly become more memorable once you play through near identical sequels year after year.

    Batman to my mind stands out, because it incorporates the modern way of making games with all the flashy production values, but actually pulls all that off by being brilliantly paced with neatly designed gameplay.

    If only all developers were that smart.

    @DSB: I'm not saying that nobody said there weren't any good games around, but you said "I think it's been one of the weakest generations." and in response I believe that it's actually been incredibly strong. Maybe even the best ever.

    For example, my favorite 5 from last gen would probably be:

    Okami, Pikmin, Rez, Metroid Prime, RE 4.

    ...whereas my fav 5 from this generation would be:

    Dead Space 1, Demon's Souls, Bioshock, Super Mario Galaxy, Vanquish.

    last gen's highs were a little higher for me, but this gen had so many more highs, and they were pretty high all the same... ho hum.

    Good question. I'm 30, & I too, sometimes wonder if my passion for games is waning. I certainly don't find it as easy to get into games as I used to, but the same could be said for a lot of things; TV, movies... Maybe that's just a part of getting older, losing that magic.

    But, at the same time, I've never felt I had more great games to look forward to than now. Part of that is due to me being way behind in my gaming, (I just beat GOW1, & played my first COD game last month) so I'm pretty far from the boredom & frustration that so many gamers seem to be expressing about the current gen. I know there's always more great games to play, so I'm less willing than ever to tolerate mediocrity. If a game doesn't grab me in the first few hours, I'll move on, whereas before I might power through it on principle alone.

    It's also possible that I'm just becoming more selective. Like another poster said, it comes in waves. Sometimes I'll be in a rut, usually when a game I've started fails to live up to my now higher standards, only to put it down & try something new, something that manages to get me really excited about gaming again. It happened with Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes a few months back, and currently with Valkyria Chronicles. It may well be that I'm beginning to find more strategic, thinking games most appealing.

    However, I don't know that my tastes have matured a great deal, I have no problem whatsoever with blood & gore, T&A or f-bombs in my games, as long as they're attached to a fun experience. But I enjoy Nintendo games too. Anything with good gameplay really. Great music, graphics, and story (least important to me in games, though for certain games it's a pleasant surprise when the story is decent).

    One thing I can say for certain that's changed as far as my gaming habits as I've gotten older is that my patience for getting stuck has dropped considerably. When I was younger, I would never dream of using a guide to help me through a tough spot, I considered it the worst kind of cheating, and would just keep trying over and over until I got it, while now I have no patience at all for being truly stuck and not making any progress, I don't have time for it, so I turn to guides without hesitation.

    Another factor that affects my ability to enjoy games is that annoying adult voice in the back of my mind asking: "shouldn't you be doing something more constructive with your time?"

    Not that I think wideo games are inherently bad--far from it--but I can't play them 8 hours a day all summer like I used to and still feel good about myself.

    I think, and I hope most people agree, that it's important to continually improve yourself as you get older. So, in order to keep that nagging voice quiet, I try to do something, or several things, to better myself before I play games, so I can feel that I've "earned it."

    It might sound silly, but I find, now that I'm older, I can actually relax and enjoy games better if I've put in a hard days work, exercised, or done something creative first.

    I still make bad gaming choices, like this past summer break, when I had two weeks off & the opportunity to go hiking in the mountains, but chose to stay home instead, (because it would have meant 6+ hours of driving), but I ended up regretting it. I should have gone hiking, the games would have been there when I got back.

    Balance is important, and I think knowing when to game and when to do something else is key to more positive gaming in the future.

    27 here and I still love gaming. I can see why some people think it's in a rut but I still enjoy it.

    My problem with getting into games these days is more time restrictions. I do still manage to find the odd day at the weekend to mong out gaming but now it's just an hour or two in the evening if I'm lucky*.

    *Bare in mind I literally never watch TV, shows and only the occasional movie. Any time in front of a TV would preferably be spent gaming over anything else.

    1 here. Agree with both the sentiment that the current age of gaming is fantastic (and the best we've had) and also that there is a needed upheaval of sorts going on too.

    I tend to lean more towards the slower paced games these days, but still enjoy a variety of stuff. I suppose I always had a tendency for strategy over twitch anyway.

    I've got a lot less time for gaming than I had, kids, marriage, house and all that. I do still manage a couch games night with friends once a week and game in the evenings after kids are put to bed. As my kids grow (2 & 4) I'll enjoy playing games with them more too. Wonder how long a gap there will be between me letting them win and them actually kicking my ass - not long I'm guessing :).

    I'll be 30 this January, I'm like DSB. Spending more times on indies and older games, nothing really satisfies me in long term. I still prefer playing MMOs, that's why I renewed my subscription to SWTOR. It's very rare for me to get excited for a game and most of the time I'll be disappointed. I'm only looking forward to what Valve and Kojima are doing and the kickstarter projects that really ignite the beacon of hope for me, Project Eternity, Grim Dawn, Star Citizen and a few more of these indie projects.

    All in all, I find myself less enthusiastic about the whole industry, MMOs are still what I can sink hours into and find myself satisfied. WoW, SWTOR and EVE online. Excited about World of Darkness as well. Depending on my mood and hype level I switch between those 3. It'd be extremely hard to balance 3 different subs at the same time and invest time in. EVE is usually my break up fix, that didn't happen for a long time now, which is a good thing. :D

    I hope the industry breaks away and free itself from this machine like routine, same games different publishers. I genuinely hate all the publishing firms at the moment, all they care is money. It's their investment I know but still.

    The recent Phantom Pain reactions shows that it is too rare for gamers to get excited and keep the forum boards going. But still moments like this happens on the indie scene, which is truly heart warming.

    I had a great fun with every consoled I owned until exactly this gen. I bought my PS3 only to play MGS4 and I have played that game like crazy, still do when I feel I need to slit a few throats or sneaking around only the best way possible. I have played a lot of games on PS2, PSone, SEGA Genesis, Nintendo, Super Nintendo and Atari 2600. PS3 and XBOX 360, not that much. Gears of War felt underwhelming, Halo 3, nothing I'd really like, Killzone 2, not that much, and the list goes on. I can honestly say Uncharted games were great, but it stops there. I wish I could give Nintendo a try, sometime next year, with a Wii U, I need to see how it goes first.

    Guy's it's been brilliant to hear you input, I've been reading the posts all day at work on my phone lol. Glad I'm not the only one who feels like this.

    As people have mentioned above I think a lot of it is the fact that we are spoiled these days, I remember I used to play games faster than they were coming out, and there were times when I genuinely had nothing to play. These days are long gone and there's only really one lul period a year now. I used to start a game and finish it regardless of whether or not my interest was lagging just because that was all my wallet or the release schedule allowed me to do. Now if I'm getting sick of a title early on and I know im not going to see it through to the end I'll sack it and reach for something else.

    Also seems apparent that the older you get the more your life and responsibility's get in the way...

    Exactly, I've not got any kids but I've got a house to run and a stressful job and I don't know about anyone else but I need to be fully unwound to enjoy a game or I feel I'm just wasting it, I mean your talking 35-40 a pop these days so I feel it's pointless plodding through something if I'm not taking it in properly. After all It's atmosphere and immersion I play for, I rarely do any multi player.

    Definitely, there will always be games out there to enjoy, although to find them sometimes you need to wade though some of the steaming piles this gen has given us. Swearing and showing T&A just makes me cringe these days, there's definitely a time and a place for these things in some games, but an f-bomb in every line of dialog or ridiculously scantily clad women at every turn is enough to make me face-palm, turn the game off and never put it back on, but again that's age and maturity kicking in I think.

    The most adult games I've played this year that easily kept me hooked to the end were Max Payne 3 and Dishonored, more games like this please Mr Industry :D

    Anyway I don't think im passed it just yet lol and there's plenty up-and-coming games I'm looking forward to, and I REALLY need a Wii U but I'll wait until there's more 1st party support. It's funny because I always complain about games pandering to kids but give me a Zelda game and you won't see me for a month :P

    37 and I will continue to play as long as games represent what I want. If I can no longer play games with a regular controller, if one day I am forced to use motion/voice controls instead of buttons, if everything comes with a tablet, if every system makes you pay to go online and no games focus on single player, anymore, I can see myself no longer keeping up with gaming.

    As it is, I have no urge to play any tablet games or get a phone that does anything but make calls. I also don't play on PC's, because it's too much effort to keep up with what good specs are and to constantly have to upgrade my stuff once things become out of date.

    However, I do remember a time when I didn't game anymore and made fun of the kids in 5th grade who were playing Zelda on their brand new NES consoles. It wasn't until my cousin got one and I played Contra, Castlevania 3, and Mario 3 that I got back into it. By the time she got a Genesis, I took her NES. When I got a Genesis, I sold the NES.

    But I love gaming. It takes up about a quarter of my time, and it is definitely my therapy, but I can see a future where I no longer do it, if it changes enough that it doesn't offer what I like anymore.

    As far as being an adult goes, Littlebigplanet 2 was the first game I've ever chosen not to buy, specifically because I knew I would never do anything else but create levels/games with it. Fifteen years ago, I would have gotten it and then locked myself in my room with it for six months and not socializing with anyone.

    I've also discovered I don't really play previous generations of games that often, once I've moved on. There's like 2 PS2 games I still want to play, but otherwise, I sold most of my PS2 collection, including about 7 games that were still on the backlog. A couple years back, I got the Genesis Collection, but I mostly play it with friends who are feeling nostalgic for games. As someone who was hugely into his Coleco, I've played a couple games like Zaxxon and Congo Bongo on the Collection and I can't imagine those things held my interest for hours at a time, when I was a kid.

    I think Clupula, the trick is to not expect the industry to pander to you. I think there will always be games to enjoy, regaurdless of your tastes. But at some point I think you out grow or out age if you will, the bulk of what the industry cranks out.

    I think that along the same lines it would be smart of the industry to releaize that they do have an aging demographic. From reading here I can see that I am not the only one that doesn't buy the same kinds of games that I used to.

    Maybe the industry will catch on? Maybe our tastes will become niche? I hope so, because I am often affraid of being cast aside because of some or other type of game is so large that against it, I just don't matter.

    Thank god I/we still have retro stuff lol!

    I am not telling you my age. Screw that. Let's just say I am old enough to enjoy a drink but I would go to jail for looking the wrong way at a young man.

    So, with that said, I think the amount of years left on my gamer card are innumerable. I think it just depends on the genre whether I will try it out.

    When I was younger, I liked platformers. As I got in to junior/high school RPGS; college, shooters.

    Now I am more into MMOs and adventure RPGS. I like the experience, the saturation, and the feeling that my character is "living" in the world. I will probably ALWAYS be up for a game the size of an Elder Scrolls title - I just can;t spend 10 hours a night every night on them anymore.

    It's just as you get older your responsibilities change and you don't have as much time as you like to play. Nor the funds.

    I thought it was supposed to get easier as you get older. Nope. You have bills, broken vacuums, propane and food to buy, vet bills, transmissions to buy for your car, insurance, rent... the list goes on. Your days off are spent catching up on chores or organizing your closets or going to the dentist/doctor/DMV/what have you.

    I wish I lived in my Mom's basement. I could play games all day and eat her awesome food and sleep in on Sundays. :D
