I'm still largely on the fence, but so far, here are my thoughts:

Pros: "Trophy" support, lots of memory, reasonable enough price (in my opinion), possibilities for asymmetric play are rife, launch window line-up looks reasonably solid, some decent 3rd party exclusives, it plays Pikmin 3...

Cons: No GC BC = Sad TG, the price of an extra controller is price-gouging and offensive, 8GB and 32GB are probably just big enough to function in practice, but I'd like to have a bit of comfort space on my HDD, I worry that not having a wiimote included as standard is going to fracture the player base.

But overall, I'm leaning towards positive on this one. I think it'll end up having some genuine treasures on there. And it has Pikmin 3!

So, what do you think VG massive?

loving it. preordered it (32gb). i am really excited. i wont make the same mistake that i made with the wii. i was doubting and hesitating and did buy it very late and then asked myself what the hell was wrong with me. i have been marketing brainwashed by the HC/casual bullshit i guess, eventhough i am nintendo fan since nes days, i thought motion controll is for grannys and kids, nintendo fucked up big time with wii...pffff, what a joke. back to wiiu: the gamepad looks like it will add enough freshness to the game. i am a bit tired of this fading gen. nintendos timing is just right. i think becaue of their timing a lot of the self crowned HC crowd will end up buying one too and then probably start to love it. i cannot wait for what a zelda or metroid game will do with the touch pad. i like what i have seen about miiverse too. it looks like an interesting and fun system. i am loving using the letter system on the 3ds already, it´s cool to send your friends a hybrid photo of you and your girlfiend combined as one person, or a pic of your ninty dog, or a pilotwings screenshot as a holiday greeting postcard and stuff like that. i really do not want trophies but well....people seem to demand it. it will play wii games. some on the pad alone! this will be awesome! i hope i can play DKCR or krirby dreamland on the tablet alone. i will keep my wii so i can still play the GCgames on that thing. would hav eloved GC BC too though but not really bothering me. pricing is just right. you can put in any additional harddrive you might need. 32 gb is enough for quite some time. nintendoland, nsmbu, rayman, zombiu, pikmin3 for me as soon as possible, as well as shitloads of 3ds games. i can only talk for myself but in the last 1,5 years the most games i bought have been nintendo games...i cannot se them doing much wrong at the moment. they sure help me keep enjoying gaming A LOT!

Really not sold on the system but I HAVE to get one because it has Bayonetta 2. It's one of THOSE games that is worth getting a system for. In other words, if Bayonetta 2 comes out soon, I'm going to pay at least $300 plus $60 for a single game.

Hopefully by the time next gen systems come out (PS4 and 720), all available ones (360, PS3 and Wii U) get a price cut. If Bayonetta 2 comes out late, then could probably get a discounted Wii U. Probably second hand along with Rayman Legends.

@The_Red: Devil's Advocate here - I think you could just wait a little. Ninty 3rd party exclusives have a habit of un-exclusiving themselves. Weren't RE4, Viewtiful Joe and No More Heroes exclusives? I think there were plenty others too...

Not sold yet. The price is too high given the inevitable peripheral gouging that'll occur like it did with the Wii (the Wii seems the cheap option but ramps up very very quickly indeed).

The Bayonetta 2 thing is interesting but I'm not convinced it'll remain a platform exclusive. I don't see how the tablet can add anything meaningful to that sort of game's gameplay style. And when I say meaningful I don't regard a mini map, status screen or a move list as meaningful. I've seen far too much touch-screen and motion control stuff that isn't meaningful in gameplay terms (such as ignoring a button on the DS in favour of having a button on the screen that you touch. It's still a button, it's just now using up screen space). Also, Bayonetta is not the sort of game I would want to tear my eyes away from the game-screen from very often. And that's a concern I have with that tablet as a whole, actually.

So, Bayonetta 2 - I'll see what meaningful gameplay is WiiU specific. If it's just the simple fluff then I fully expect it to go cross platform. It wouldn't be the first such game to go cross platform - such as Ninja Gaiden 3 or No More Heroes. A precedent exists.

On the topic of 'Bayonetta 2 tears' - this isn't a first either. Remember MGS4? "Oh I'll have to miss it instead of buying the machine its on". Other examples exist on all platforms. But it's cute that those are forgotten and this view is only 'wrong' in the eyes of many gamers and the games media when it concerns a Nintendo platform. Again, a precedent exists - for those without selective memories or looking to make sensationalist 1-sided articles or you-tube videos.

I tend to wait a year after platform launch. Let it bed in. See how the support goes. Let the OMG!HYPE! settle so some objectivity can creep in. The fans were always going to buy it anyway, so that means nothing to me anyway.

I have a feeling this console may make Sony and MS delay the launches of their next consoles a bit in a bid to squeeze some more life out of this gen.

I expect another revision of both the PS3 and 360 (maybe in tablet form) before the launch of the next gen.

If Ms launched a cheap 360 tablet, it could help them ensure Smart Glass was being used on their own tablet for 720...

I can't see either of them rushing now as they could have potentially another year of system parity which would help all 3 manufacturers out.

Sony has GOW, Last of us, Smash Brothers, all the tokyo game show games; puppeteer etc... Bioshock, GTA...

Same with MS just not so many exclusives. GOW, Halo etc...

Now with all 3 consoles in the same ballpark, we could see another 2 years of this gen maybe?

Just a thought.

Another reason i'll be buying one!

Actually, that'd be kinda cool, if they waited that little bit longer. It'd give them more time to get their strategy in order, and get more bang for their buck in terms of console horsepower.

Exactly, everyones a winner.

We all imagine the main manufacturers fighting, but when it comes to it, creating strategys that help everyone out always happen in business too.

Fanboys will always fight over brands, but this kind of idea could benefit gaming in general!

Crazy thought, yeah?!

If Sony and MS really want to get 10+ years out of next gen and also include streaming capabilities, then launching next year would be too soon IMO...

Wait another year, have a great line up of launch games and make the consoles as future proof as possible.

This also means you get 2 years of Wii U gaming goodness too and developers can learn how to push the system.

as much as they all compete, gaming needs Nintendo to offer balance at the moment.

The Wii helped corner a market that Sony and MS can benefit from too, people are blinded by bias if they think the Wii U couldn't be a great help to the industry at the moment, with rising costs of development, the indie scene exploding etc...

Nintendo seem to give balance to me and thats why i like their strategy.

Also their games kick ass, so that helps too! ;)

If MS could launch a Xbox branded tablet next E3 that could play XBLA games and launched at £100 - £150 with the promise of extra 720 Smart Glass connectivity, that could be pretty huge.

It would enable them to get Windows 8 tablets into homes in a sleeper fashion, at the same time it would prep people for the 720.

Then they would have to sell an expensive all in one package at the 720 launch.

People who bought one could recieve extra features and it could maybe take away some of Apples market share.

The ten years thing was always including overlap - like the PS2. I.e. they want the PS3 to be a viable seller and consumer option for 10 years. That will include at least a couple of years overlap with the PS4 launch. That's always been the idea. It was never meant to be ten years from launch of PS3 to launch of PS4.

Mitigating factor in storage is confirmation you can use SD Cards *and* USB HDD/sticks. Only USB2.0 but it makes expanding beyond your original built in reasonably cheap.

I've pre-ordered with Mario and ZombiU but yet to decide if I will "follow through" :)

Edit: Oh on MS and Sony next gen launch plans. I think these are far too far along to consider major alterations in design. A delay for software maybe, but hardware is more or less final now.

Ok have to clear one thing up for you guys. The onboard 8 or 32 GB means nothing. Literaly. The system allows you to plug in an external HDD, upto 3TB. We will have "unlimited" digital storage. I was talking first hand with a Gamestop manager that has seen the system and its games.

I already have mine preordered as well.

Yeah, it was only hypothetical, i haven't got insider knowledge.

It would just make sense thats all. We now a PS3 Slim/Slim is around the corner, potentially a new 360 could be as well.

The over lap thing i understand but at the moment, Sony has only just started breaking even on the PS3, for them another few years wouldn't hurt...

I expect an announcement this E3, but not launch till 2014.

Gameswise, the end of this year & next year is pretty strong for both the 360 and PS3. Seems a waste if they don't try and drag it out that little bit more.

If games like MGS 5 are on this gen, it would seem likely no new console launch will happen next year.

For me, the fact that Wii U will be the most powerful of the 3 machines (just), but the cost of making games will be on par with the 360/720. I can see a lot of developers (especially niche jap studios) favouring it over the 720 / PS4 which is going to cost an absolute shit ton to make a triple AAA game on them.

From that perspective, i hope to see lots of amazing RPG's, lots of retro games making a comeback and potentially amazing art styles being developed.

To me it's the Dreamcast 2 in all but name, just without Sega's shitty marketting teams behind it.

Once Pokemon and Monster Hunter start printing money for Nintendo, im sure we'll see lots more stuff like Bayonetta 2, Vanquish 2 etc...

I think it'll become a great console while the 720 and PS4 fight over new versions of COD and similar stuff we've had on the 360/PS3 with better graphics.

I know, people are really nit picking when it comes to things like that.

Everyone always states it as a plus point being able to upgrade the PS3 harddrive, now suddenly it's a negative?!

Who hasn't got a portable drive kicking around these days?

Seems like people are trying to pick holes in every area. Unless Nintendo only let there own overpriced HD's be used on Wii U, whats there to complain about?!

Yeah prolly would be lil faster, Doc, but not really a big deal. If I could use an external HDD with my PS3, I would be thrilled. The PSN+ tore thru my internal HDD space pretty fast. Just nice to have imo. I think the on board mem I will just use for profile stuff, will have to get my hands on it to know for sure what the best coarse of action is.

It is just when people claim that the storage space in an issue, they either don't know what they are talking about(and the info just got released so they might not) or they are just ripping on the system. I am glad Nintendo decided to let me buy cheaper expandable storage then to put storrage inside and charge me more for it.

We don't have to buy perpritory Nintendo liscenced extrenal HDD, MonkeyG. I have a 1TB laying around that I plan to use. I honestly can't see me going thru that in the systems lifetime.

Exactly, it'd would only be an issue if you could only use Nintendo HD's, and they were charging £100.00 for 80gbs or something.

To me, this is a god send. I have a 500gb hard drive kicking around, that'll last me forever.

I still haven't filled up my 3DS card, i have about 10 demo's, 20 VC games, 5 DSi games and 10 3DSware games, so im really not fussed about storage.

Well there is a comparison point to be made. I.e. when you compare to costs of 360 or PS3 systems you need to take this into account. OG is right though the use of USB Drives is not well known or advertised.

Your average FIFA EA demo weighs in at 2Gb. Much bigger than a 3DS title.

@OG
If you use PS+ I'd recommend upgrading the internal HD of your PS3. Pretty painless if you have an external USB drive to use temporarily in the process.

It's very easy. Hardest part was getting the external USB drive formatted so the PS3 was happy with it. FAT32 I think it needed.

Can't say I'm that excited about it tbh. Looks ok but not enough on there I want to play at moment. Defo no day 1 purchase, maybe give it a year or so and have another look.

I may try and talk my sis in to buying my nephew one for Xmas so I can have a go at least! ;o)

Without serious online or serious third party support, I can't get excited about it, but most of the people I've seen who have actually spent time with it, seem to think it's awesome, so I'm pretty sure they're onto something with the asymmetrical concept.

So far the worst thing about it is that they're going with a humongous, rectangular pad. Really clunky, and much bigger than it has any right to be. Why choose a design that looks like something for a Commodore 64? I don't really understand their priorities.

At the end of the day, Microsoft and Sony are going to do what they've always done though, they make good consoles, but consoles without a real sense of adventure. It's the safe bet, always.

People dismiss Nintendo for not digging in like those two, but I think that's their biggest advantage. Changing the way people play is exciting stuff.

Isn't that one of the strongest and most varied launches in a while?

Not many people would be able to afford all of those on launch, but I thought you'd have been interested in quite a few of those as you seem to champion gameplay over graphics.

How many games are you waiting for?!

@monkey I am interested in them, but like you said, it's a matter of cost.

Out of all those you listed, the only ones you've listed that I'm interested in are P100 (Platinum. <3) and Scribblenauts Unlimited, which is coming to the 3DS anyway. I would add ZombieU to that list except for the fact that we've barely seen any actual gameplay of the thing.

By the time the console goes down in price, half those games will have been reduced in cost too. I don't see the rush.

Cool, just was interested, for me the line up was great, def better than what i was expecting.

And the price too, for some reason I thought they'd go mad, and it would be £300 plus for the console, so in a way, I was quite happy when they announced the final price point.

I never really expect to pay less than £250 for a new console. Not because I want too or am loaded, just because that always seems about the price point from the PS1 days...

Also, I still remember having to pay £49.99 upwards for SNES games (SF2 was £64.99 when it came out in UK), so gaming almost seems cheap to me these days! ;)

Only one game would have made this a must buy for me, and that was a Super Mario 64 style game. Since it doesn't have that, and I find the other titles mostly "meh", I'll be waiting. I'm a shooter, adventure, and RPG fan and the Wiiu doesn't really have anything must have for me.

I wanted to want one, but instead I'll wait for the reviews and peoples opinions of the games first. I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the SNES, I was hoping this was the one that would make have to have it, buts it not. Hopefully, I'll get that awesome Mario 3d title or Zelda title eventually and Then I'll look into it, might be cheaper then too.

Pretty much all the launch titles just don't interest me enough to buy yet. I don't really see the launch lineup as that strong unless your a Nintendo fan already. To all who are buying one, I can't wait to read your opinions :)

Not going to buy one yet. Neither could i afford it, but even if i could, it wouldn't be worth it for me, since there's alot of great games coming for my Xbox 360. But i'm not gonna say i will never buy it, we'll have to wait and see. I wonder...Nintendo didn't speak much on Nintendo Network, but is there even cross-chat?

@Telepathic.Geometry I know and indeed have enjoyed that when it happened to Viewtiful Joe and Killer 7 but they were all PUBLISHED by third parties (Capcom and such).

This game is publisher (and probably financed) by Nintendo so chances of that are slim. Still, there is no way I'll be getting Wii U before 2014. The moment next-gen systems come out, Nintendo will cut Wii U's price and that would be the time to buy one.
Plus the previously exclusive game going multi platform means it has bombed on original platform and I don't want to see any Platinum game bomb.

That about right? Or are there some other gems I'm missing? And don't quote me vaporware like the next proper Mario/Zelda/Smash game. They're a ways off...
