The Overwatch Sombra ARG countdown ended today, revealing ... even more Sombra ARG
Overwatch, c'mon. C'mon, Overwatch.
The Overwatch Sombra ARG timer ended today, but if you were hoping for a full reveal, well - sorry.
Unlike Ana, who was teased and then released in Overwatch shortly thereafter to the surprise and delight of players, Sombra's lengthy introduction doesn't look likely to end any time soon.
Here's what happened today: the countdown timer uncovered by ARG sleuths back in August ticked over to complete, and the site updated with a message suggesting Bastion has been compromised by Sombra. The ARG hounds scoured the site, but all they found was what looked like an Overwatch update reference.
As it happens, there was a small Overwatch title update released at the same time - and Overwatch players then noticed some changes to Bastion's victory pose. According to the Overwatch subreddit, on some skins it now blinks out the name SOMBRA in Morse code.
And that seems to be it, so far. Some Overwatch fans are a bit miffed by this; after a full month of anticipation, they were expecting something a bit more significant than yet another trail of crumbs.
It doesn't help that everyone knows what's coming - these months and months of teasing have made it pretty clear that Sombra is an upcoming hero, and so the ARG has kind of lost its impact. And that was before the release of Overwatch's Halloween event lent a lot of credence to an alleged internal Overwatch memo leak featuring Sombra.
At this stage further teasing is really not necessary. Even without the leak, Overwatch players knew she was coming. They're excited for a new hero, but - they're also kind of tired of Blizzard's games.
Sombra will probably be announced at BlizzCon next month.
